I built a small AI tattoo reference tool and realized validation is harder than generation

I’m currently validating a small AI tattoo visual reference tool.

The idea is simple: help people explore tattoo directions, styles, and visual references before talking to a tattoo artist. It is not meant to replace artists or generate final tattoo designs.

What I built:
A lightweight AI Tattoo Generator for early tattoo idea exploration.

Honest early stage:

  • Still in validation
  • Using a workers.dev link for now
  • Testing whether people actually want AI-assisted tattoo references
  • No serious launch yet

What I’m learning:
Building the tool was easier than figuring out where real tattoo-curious users are willing to give feedback. Some channels feel too promotional if I share the link too early.

Where I’m stuck:
I’m trying to understand which early signals matter most for a consumer creative AI tool like this.

Would you look first at:

  • site visits
  • generations
  • saves/downloads
  • email signups
  • comments from tattoo-curious users
  • or something else?

If anyone has validated a visual or creative AI tool before, I’d love to hear what signal you trusted first.

Small follow-up after thinking about the first validation signals: I’m now treating “generation count” as the weakest signal and “saved reference / prompt iteration / someone saying they would bring this to an artist” as stronger signals.

For a tattoo tool, the product should not be judged like a generic image toy. The more useful question is whether it helps someone explain a direction better before a real consultation. So I’m keeping the framing as visual reference and handoff clarity, not final tattoo design or artist replacement.

If anyone has validated a creative tool before, did saves/downloads end up being a better signal than raw usage?

I'd be careful with one thing.

The interesting question may not be which metric matters most.

It may be what decision you're actually trying to make with the metric in the first place.

Those sound similar, but they can lead to very different conclusions about validation, user demand, and what deserves confidence next.

I wouldn't make that call casually from the current signals.
