There is one thing that I've always wanted to see from sites like these. I'm not a designer so deciding how to apply a color palette is tough. A curated set of colors i.e. this is the primary brand, CTA buttons, secondary buttons etc. would be super useful.

Bonus points if when browsing palettes it showed a layout of how it would look applied to a UI.

I really like this idea. I understand it requires a trained eye and technical knowledge to choose a color palette but then there's another gap to know how to apply it.

This is an easy guide to begin to understand the process:

      https://refactoringui.com/previews/building-your-color-palette/

I can totally see a product like this, you select a palette on the left, and a layout on the right, and the click to apply the colors, something like this:

Yea the Refactoring UI guys do a great job at making their content super relevant for the real world.

The article you pointed out describes exactly where I struggle. 5 colors that look good together but when applying to a web UI look amateurish at best.

I don't need things to be super unique. Give me a choice of color packs and good to go.

        Hey James,
like that a lot that I already started to work in something like that...let me see what I can do.

        I loved the idea...

It's going to take a bit tho...

        1. 1

Awesome! Will be keen to check it out :)

      Hey James!

      something like this ?
      https://cimdalli.github.io/mui-theme-generator/

I have had the idea of theming also, like having a layout and a toggle changing the color of that theme using the sites palettes... and fonts.

I like the idea James, really worth a try...

Something like that. IMO having the UI as separate components rather than a complete layout makes it a little hard to visualize.

        1. 1

          I have started like this:

I have put a toggle on the navbar to toggle the themes.

Then, underneath, a fake layout where the themes will show after choosing a palette on the toggle.

          what you think ?

          1. 1

hmm, I'm not sure that I follow.

            1. 1

I was also thinking to put just the components.

              • Bottons
              • Badge
              • Dropdowns
                ... and so on...
            2. 1

You can see here the skeleton of the idea.

              https://www.colorsandfonts.com/testads.html

I am trying to find out what "fake layout" could be the best one to showcase the colors... kind of lost right there.

              1. 1

maybe you need multiple layouts for the standard pages used like

                • landing page
                • classic blog post layout (header, content, sidebar)
                • an admin panel of some sort

              Hey Tony,

this what I have achieved by now:

              https://www.colorsandfonts.com/testads.html

Let me know what you think if it's ok.

                  Hey Tony.

Do you mean to just have access to the layout if a user copies the palette?

                  like, on a modal?

otherwise, I could use this idea as a new product... if it gets too cluttered with this.

                      Hey Tony,
                      Thank you for your answer.

There is where I am not sure how to achieve it without getting messy. It would be too much clicking around.
So I was thinking to have it as another side project without having nothing to do with c&f.

that prompts the idea of having an aside bar with useful palettes where the user can toggle thru them.
Like we say, 20 different palettes dark and bright.
                      Is just an idea.

    3. 1

hey James, what about this ?

      https://www.colorsandfonts.com/testads.html

did you ment something like this?
toggle the theme the first toggle

the rest are not working still..!

    Hi Michael,

For colors and palettes, I've always used https://www.colourlovers.com, but unfortunately, their site has become infested with a ridiculous amount of ads over the past year. To the point where it's basically unusable. Since then I've switched to using https://coolors.co for finding, storing and sharing palettes.

I think your site definitely has potential. The layout clean and easy to navigate and I was able to see what it's about immediately. I was mostly looking at the colors and gradients though, not so much the fonts.

    Some ideas:

    • Liking or voting system for the palettes, gradients and fonts. Most of these sites have something like this and would make it easier for indecisive people to find a palette to use.
    • Charging for access to premium palettes (maybe from other known designers)?

But overall it looks great, will definitely be bookmarking this and using it in the future! πŸ˜€

      Hi Hschutte,

I saw that on COLOURlovers, I met some people with the same opinion. I have to say that I am amazed by Coolors.co I use to use it myself even, I could spend hours there just playing around.

I have seen that many users do not really use the fonts, because we have, of course, Google Fonts, and I get it. I wanted to have the service there too so people do not have the necessity to jump around to other website and have everything there.

      Regarding the ideas:

      • I have been trying to avoid that system of liking and upvoting, mostly because I wanted to be extremely curated, so I am the one updating them manually. It does not mean I do not like the idea tho, because I actually do.

      • If the majority asks for it I will definitely implement it, but I will still update them my self.

      • Charging? I did not saw that coming... It's a good idea tho, access to premium palettes... I like that.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer the question @hschutte I really appreciate.
And thank you for bookmarking it, that makes me really happy.

      Have a nice day!

      /mike

Hi Michael, I am not a developer or a designer so I might not able to answer your queries but I found your idea very unique.
    All the best !
