How Shri Vatz Grew Guidejar to $4K MRR—Solo

Jakob here šŸ–

In my newsletter Fake Mayo I share weekly stories (interviews) of how founders got their first customers.

Meet Shri Vatz, a 30-year-old indie hacker from Chennai, India, who transitioned from software developer to solo founder. After selling two products, ColdDM and SupportGuy, Shri went all-in on his third venture: Guidejar.

Launched in late 2023, Guidejar helps users create step-by-step how-to guides and interactive product demos. Ideal for onboarding, training, and reducing support queries. The initial launch was quiet, but a successful Lifetime Deal (LTD) campaign on AppSumo changed everything. In just four months, Guidejar gained over 950 paying customers.

From there, Shri shifted to a subscription model, growing Guidejar to $4K MRR with 170+ customers. Much of the growth came from word-of-mouth, Reddit engagement, SEO, directory listings, and clever ā€œPowered by Guidejarā€ backlinks.

Shri faced challenges, messaging misfires, ineffective cold outreach, and low-ROI ads, but learned two key lessons: look beyond the indie hacker bubble, and keep experimenting.

What started as a side project is now a fast-growing SaaS with a loyal user base. Shri continues to refine the product and its positioning. Proving that consistent effort and curiosity lead to compounding wins.

Love this, Jakob — and congrats Shri on the journey. Really inspiring how you combined AppSumo + SEO + backlinks for growth.

I’m building CompliAssistant, an AI-powered HIPAA compliance assistant for small businesses drowning in paperwork and policies. It’s early days but we’re focused on delivering real, usable outcomes — and your ā€œoutside the indie bubbleā€ lesson hits home.

Curious: how would you approach product-led growth in a highly regulated market like healthcare?

Subscribed to Fake Mayo — great work all around!

Thank you very much. I'm really glad that you like the newsletter.

I'm not sure I'm qualified to answer your question though. Btw - would it be relevant for you to have your CompliAssistant starter story featured in the newsletter?

      1. 1

Thanks so much Jakob — that means a lot!

And yes, I’d absolutely be up for sharing the CompliAssistant starter story in the newsletter. Still early days, but happy to be transparent about what’s working (and what isn’t) as we build in a tricky but important space. Just let me know what you’d need from me!

Excited to keep learning from your posts and the Fake Mayo community šŸ™Œ

          Sounds great!

I have a very short PDF guide for this. Could I ask you to DM me on X and I'll send it to you?

Absolutely — I’ll DM you now! Looking forward to checking out the guide and getting the ball rolling.

Appreciate the opportunity to share CompliAssistant’s story with your readers — especially as we try to make HIPAA compliance less of a headache for small teams.

            Thanks again Jakob!

                Hi jakob

I dropped you a message via X yesterday. Still waiting on a response. Excited to hear from you!

That is strange. I have no unread DM's left and I can't find you. What is your X handle.

                  1. 1

My X handle is - CompliAssistant
