Advice for starting an online community with an ambitious goal

We are working on a service to allow anyone to offer a password free login for their users. It should take no more than 10 minutes to set up on a website you run. (Once you are off the wait list, we are currently very alpha)

Communities like Monzo were an inspiration for us to start our own community. Monzo was an inspiration because Banking might not be the most glamorous subject, but it affects peoples everyday life and enough people feel strongly about the fact that banking could be better.

Passwords are similar; people deal with regularly and in many cases feel strongly that they should be better.

For these reasons we started forgetpasswords.com

forgetpasswords.com is two things.

First, it is the first working demo site. To login requires our authentication method.

Second, it is a genuine effort to discuss the topic of replacing passwords. We think several solutions will replace passwords over the coming years, we hope our solution is just one of them.

So my questions are:

1. Has anyone built or tried building a community like this?

2. How should we promote it, what topics are good to start at the beginning?

3. Is it even a good idea to spend time on a community like this.
