Instagram is releasing an AI video editing tool, but most people aren't excited.

Meta is releasing Movie Gen, its AI video editor, sometime next year.
Movie Gen allows creators to edit any aspect of their video with just a text prompt.
The reaction to the release was very negative, with many worried that it will overload Instagram with AI slop.
All the AI attention right now is on OpenAI's new o3 model, and for good reason. But, that doesn't mean it's the only thing going on.
One of those other developments is Meta's Movie Gen, an AI video editing tool.
The alpha comes from Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri, as he demonstrated some of Movie Gen's powers in a Reel posted on Thursday.
Basically, Movie Gen will allow you to change nearly any aspect of your videos with just a text prompt. Want to change your outfit? Done. Background? Easy. Turn yourself into a cartoon? No problemo.
It looks and sounds awesome. Who wouldn't want a tool that turns anyone into a professional video editor? Well, judging from the reactions to Mosseri's demonstration, it appears that almost nobody is excited:

Overall, this seems to track with how people feel about AI outside of our tech bubble. Where we see a future utopia, they see a technology that takes jobs and fills the internet with slop.
On one level, I can understand where they are coming from. Seeing too much AI-generated content is definitely annoying. On the other hand...Movie Gen is just a video editor. There's nothing you can do with it that a skilled video editor couldn't do without it. All it really does is democratize access to video editing.
In theory, it should be a win-win situation for everyone involved:
By making it easier to edit videos, Meta makes Instagram a more attractive home for creators. In other words, Video Gen can be for Instagram what CapCut was for TikTok, an easy-to-use but still powerful native video editing tool.
Creators will be able to expertly edit videos, without needing to know how to edit videos.
Consumers will get better, more entertaining videos.
It's up to Meta and the Instagram creators to turn theory into reality.
The general public has already learned through their own experiences that mass adoption of AI creation tools may “democratize” certain forms of content generation, but that the result of that is often a worse experience for them. People using these tools to save money or generate things with less human effort can argue until they are blue in the face that this is somehow better for their audiences, but that’s simply not how the average person feels.
There's no mandate that they have to keep following these creators. If they don't like the AI content, they can just go somewhere else. If anything, it will make human content more valuable!
I get the logic, but that’s not how it’s playing out in things people already use like organic search. You can’t opt-out of the junk that is making it useless. And given how who you follow matters less and less even on platforms like Instagram, I think the public assumes (and not without reason) that crap will simply overwhelm their ability to find and be served good content.
I still think the market will work this out, either from the algorithms prioritizing human content if that's what people begin to prioritize, or by new social media platforms that prioritize human content.
Great feature to add onto IG. With the expansion of this type of tech I wonder if marketing will become more difficult because of how accessible these tools will be to everyone. It will be much harder to stand out but an even playing field.
Movie Gen is just another tool—it's all about how creators use it! Just like CapCut boosted TikTok, this could make Instagram even better for both creators and viewers. More accessibility means more creativity.
Movie Gen is fascinating—AI-powered editing could really shake up content creation. Do you think this is an opportunity for indie developers to build complementary tools, or is Meta going to dominate this space completely?

I believe AI will ruin the human nature eventually. People are losing touch with something very important and that is creativity and critical thinking. When these 2 core values are replaced by AI, human nature disappears. Mass adoption of AI will always result in a negative effect.
this is scary, everything is ai now
very informative
This seems like a great feature for content creators to use to save time in the editing process. Simply put this seems like an advanced editing tool that will allow better and faster quality posts. While the increased use of AI can be alarming and distracting from raw talent and skills it is not unlike other technological advancements around.
Meta’s new AI video editing features for Instagram will make content creation easier by automating tasks like trimming, adding effects, and even generating captions. This can save creators time and improve the overall quality of posts. Have you tried these features yet? How do you think AI will change the way we create content on Instagram?
