How do we choose what podcasts to launch with?

Hi all! We hacked together an app over the weekend that basically takes recent podcast episodes, shows you a few good clips from them in a feed and everyone’s time-matched reactions to them.

This is a spin off from Blurb, which we recently launched to automate podcast teasers.

We think these highlights can be used as a way for anyone to discover new podcast content.

It costs us money to produce each set of highlights, but we really believe in the project so we’re willing to put down $1k+ to fund the creation of the first 50 podcasts to feature.

We just don’t know how to select the first 50 podcasts!

Any ideas?

@ip I've done some work cultivating knowledge about identifying top podcasts. Feel free to email me [email protected] to chat.

Reaching out now, Conrad! What do you think of @harriskenny's approach above?

I think that's a good place to start. Apple also has a store api which would allow you to find the top podcasts by genre. You can then pull their details and RSS for episode details, counts. I think picking a couple of genres and getting the top 10 podcasts in each would quickly identify your 50 to start with.

If you want to add value to "yet to be discovered" podcasts, maybe you want to find podcasts that launched within the last year that have 20 - 30 episodes.

@jkaoyagi, @lukzett, @podse, @nafetswirth, @alexhillman - You all had some great insight for us re Blurb - any thoughts?

These lists are great, @harriskenny - thank you. I've been thinking a lot about your comment since you wrote.

Launching across a bunch of categories, even if only 10-15, is so broad that building an audience around the app will be difficult. There would be no clear set of communities to engage.

Instead, choosing 1-3 related categories of podcasts, with well-defined communities around them, is probably the best way to go. Like you said; if we're after the indie hackers, boostrappers etc., then let's start with those podcasts and engage the highly specific and identifiable related communities.

Thanks so much for your insight. Much, much appreciated.
