Tumblr is now going to start using WordPress plugins and themes. This means WordPress plugin businesses will become more profitable.
A few days ago, Automattic (the company behind WordPress) announced something interesting: it will soon migrate Tumblr to WordPress. More specifically, they're going to migrate Tumblr's back end to WordPress.
The background:
Automattic acquired Tumblr in August 2019. Then they announced plans to migrate its backend. However, the actual implementation of the plan starts now.
How many sites will be affected?
Half a billion. That's not a typo. According to Automattic's announcement, Tumblr hosts over half a billion blogs. Just for a comparison, around 455 million websites run on WordPress.
So when the update completes, WordPress will double the number of sites that run on its platform. Let that sink in.
WordPress has a vast ecosystem (plugins, themes, etc.).
Automattic will most likely make that ecosystem available to its newly powered blogs that previously ran on Tumblr.
Twitter already has a limited set of themes and plugins. But that's about to change soon.
After the migration is complete and people start getting used to the new ecosystem, there's going to be a significant uptick of plugin & theme users.
This is good news for us indie hackers who develop add-ons for third-party platforms.
If you did you research, you'll know that the migration includes running Tumblr backend on WordPress. Tumblr frontend and user experience will not change so there will be no extra demand for any WordPress theme or plugins. The demand is actually going down due to competition from others like Shopify, Webflow...etc.
No it won't, and Matt is doing his utmost to broadcast platform risk in the WordPress ecosystem is high.
Darko Gjorgjievski's observation underscores the increasing requirement for WordPress themes and plugins. With more businesses looking to improve their online presence, there will be a rise in the need for customizable, user-friendly options. This pattern emphasizes the significance of developers to create and provide adaptable solutions to fulfill a variety of client requirements.
