When TikTok was down, Bluesky and X launched their own short-form video feedsIH+ Subscribers Only

Bluesky launches trending video feeds, X rolls out a dedicated video tab, and indie hackers are eyeing untapped opportunities in the short-form video game.

Yesterday, TikTok was supposed to be history. For 12 hours, it was. And then it came back online, crediting President Trump for its revival.

“In agreement with our service providers, TikTok is in the process of restoring service,” the company said in a statement. “We thank President Trump for providing the necessary clarity and assurance to our service providers that they will face no penalties providing TikTok to over 170 million Americans and allowing over 7 million small businesses to thrive.”

While TikTok's user base celebrated, X and Bluesky did not, as they wanted to seize the opportunity and roll out their own vertical video feeds.

Bluesky added a trending videos section to its Explore tab. Users can swipe up to browse an endless feed of short videos. You can even pin this feed to your home screen or customize it alongside other Bluesky feeds.

X on the other hand, introduced a dedicated video tab to its app’s bottom bar for US users. Before, scrolling through videos was clunky — you had to tap a video in your timeline first. Now, there's a new, clean, centralized hub for binge-worthy content.

But Bluesky isn’t just sticking with a new feed; it's going all-in on short form videos. It’s doubling down on its decentralized foundation, AT Protocol, to create new TikTok app alternatives, like Tik.Blue, Skylight.Social, and Bluescreen.Blue.

Heads up, indie hackers! Fresh traffic channels just dropped, and more are on the way. When launched, these platforms represent untapped traffic goldmines and early movers get the biggest slice of the pie.

Fellow indie hacker, seize the opportunity!

This is a great example of how fragile “single-platform dependence” really is. The moment TikTok went down, everyone realized how important it is to diversify traffic sources early—especially for creators and content-driven projects.

What’s interesting here is how Bluesky’s decentralized approach could make short-form video discovery more resilient in the long run. Early experiments on new feeds often reward creators who already have their content systems in place, like fast-loading pages, mobile-first layouts, and evergreen assets hosted on their own official website

For indie hackers, this feels like a reminder: platforms come and go, but owning your audience and infrastructure always compounds. Early movers who treat these feeds as acquisition channels—not dependencies—will likely win.

When TikTok went down, it was wild seeing Bluesky and X jump in with their own short-form video feeds — like everyone suddenly trying to fill the gap. It kind of felt like a bonus round where new platforms unlocked extra levels of creativity overnight. The internet never misses a chance to keep the game going.

Crazy how fast platforms move when they see a gap. Bluesky and X jumping into short-form video just shows how much everyone's chasing that TikTok audience. Let’s see if they can actually keep users engaged though.

The timing of Bluesky and X’s short-form video rollout is interesting from a technical standpoint. What stands out is Bluesky’s reliance on the AT Protocol — that decentralized approach gives developers flexibility to build third-party layers (like Tik.Blue or Skylight.Social) without being locked into a single app. If adoption grows, we might see federated short-form networks that can interoperate in ways TikTok never allowed.

X’s dedicated video tab feels more centralized and traditional, but it does solve the UX friction they had before. The key challenge will be content discovery algorithms — recommendation quality determines whether users binge or bounce.

For indie hackers, this looks like the early YouTube/Instagram phase: new traffic channels opening up before they become oversaturated. I’ve seen similar opportunities in the gaming/modding space (example: https://jennysmods.com/), where early content experiments can still get organic reach before platforms tighten distribution.

If Bluesky continues to merge decentralization with strong discovery mechanics, it could set a new standard for short-form ecosystems.

When TikTok went down in early 2025, both X (formerly Twitter) and Bluesky quickly launched their own short-form video feeds.

    • X introduced a dedicated Video Tab with a TikTok-style vertical feed showing sports, entertainment, and news clips.

    • Bluesky rolled out a custom trending video feed inside its Explore section, allowing users to swipe through videos and even create topic-based custom feeds.

They both did this to capture users and creators looking for an alternative while TikTok was unavailable.

It’s fascinating to see how quickly Bluesky and X moved when TikTok went down. For indie hackers, these new video feeds represent untapped traffic channels and a chance to reach engaged audiences before the platforms get crowded. It’s a great reminder that noticing trends, experimenting quickly, and iterating based on feedback can lead to real growth. Interesting timing for both X and Bluesky to push deeper into short-form video—especially during TikTok's temporary blackout. Technically speaking, Bluesky’s integration of a swipeable video feed on the AT Protocol is a smart move. It leverages decentralization while mimicking familiar UX from TikTok, which could help with adoption. X's new video tab fixes a major UI bottleneck, finally offering a smoother native video discovery experience.

Early traction always benefits first movers. These evolving feeds are definitely worth watching—for both distribution and tech experimentation.

    Hi

Bluesky has launched trending video feeds, and X (previously Twitter) has introduced a dedicated video tab, so the short-form video race is heating up! These platforms are definitely betting big on vertical content, and producers from all around are taking advantage.

But here's the twist: independent hackers and browser game developers are recognizing fresh, untapped opportunities in this sector, particularly for short-form video marketing for games like Football Bros Unblocked.

"X and Bluesky chasing short-form video is no surprise—but there's still tons of room in niche communities. I'm seeing it in the VN mod APK space: people want quick previews, updates, and mod showcases. Could a TikTok for story-driven games be next?"
