For the past year I've been struggling with SEO.
If you look, with fuzzy eye-sight, at my Google Search Console everything looks wonderful. There is a graph that goes up and to the right.
More impressions!
More clicks!
2 out of 2
Home run!
But this particular success is not what it seems.
I've been focused on making tutorials, directories, and tools, and getting myself ranked for very general google sheets terms.
Some blogs work out great. A flood of new viewers, readers, google sheet users, come in.
And then they leave.
The problem might be the conversion... sure sure sure.
But in actuality my theory is that I'm targeting viewers/readers all wrong.
If I hired an SEO consultant, who is good at SEO, I bet they'd do exactly what I've been doing. Add content. Get indexed. Get ranked. Get impressions. Get Clicks. Show the number of clicks, that you get in return for the cash payment every month.
But if I look at that traffic that goes up and to the right... and then I look at my revenue. They are not the same.
People coming to view a google sheets formula is not buying courses.
People are buying courses on Udemy. Where people go to buy courses.
to sum it up: Autodidacts are the worst customers for me.
People who, just like me 5 years ago, have to google for every answer.
Nay... people who, just like me 5 minutes ago. I have to google for answers too! Even 10 years into coding in Apps Script, I google for answers every day.
And I'm making the tutorials!
Someone like me would be a terrible customer.
I need to change.
I need to change my SEO strategy.
I need to change my overall goals with SEO to match my revenue goals.
Right now I'm on the tailend of a month long dive into what I should be doing. Hopefully I come out better, stronger, richer.
