100 paying users
by Juan IracheI created the premium version of the Telemetry Extractor for GoPro hoping that there would be 10 people willing to pay for it.
After 4 months and 3 more related products, that number has grown 10X, and it does not look like clients will stop arriving any time soon. Some of them have even purchased multiple products.
No matter how much more this grows, the energy boost and positiveness this project has already generated will help me (and hopefully someone else) create new products knowing that profitability is possible.

Amazing product mate. I don't own a GoPro but if I ever buy one I really think this is something I'd use. I love extracting data from my devices :)
Anyway, I had one thought for you. I haven't looked closely at your product so I'm not sure if you're doing something like this already, but feel free to take the ideas if you like it ;)
You might be able to boost exposure to the software by having a free / trial version that lets you export a watermarked video with some limited after effects or something.
My thinking here is that people would use it to post videos on YouTube and when other people see the video they'll also see that it was made with your product.

That's a very good idea. I'm doing it to some extent, as both the Telemetry Extractor and the After Effects templates have Lite versions. The problem is in both cases I provide a tool that helps create the data visualization, but does not produce the finished video output (at least for now), so forcing a watermark is close to impossible.

Well to be honest, I've only really extracted data from my solar panels, bank accounts and I once helped a friend get data out of his off-grid power setup.
That being said, I often think the world would be a better place if devices were more open to data extraction. I'd love to get the data out of my fitness devices, robot vacuum cleaner, smart TV and I'd be much more inclined to buy more smart home devices if I could get the data out and write my own tools for them. Unfortunately, in my experience most devices are pretty tightly locked down.
In my day job, we take free public data published by the government regulator in our industry and write software to display graphs and tables on dashboards. It's kind of amazing how much money companies will pay to buy software to display data that's already freely available. I think there's a lot of potential in this area if you can find the data and build a reputation in the industry it's for.

wow I had no idea about this data! Who do you find your customers mostly are? I can see it being useful for a lot of industrial / hobbyist applications.
And your acquisition is mostly from seo results from the forum?

Yes. There are many companies using it for data analysis in transportation or vehicle-related stuff, then many small sports teams and individuals, and also a good amount of just regular GoPro users that want to make the most out of their cameras (the GPS Quick Fix app has been selling very well on Christmas).
Yes, SEO through the forums, direct SEO to my site, YouTube SEO and direct customer support in the forums are the main acquisition channels I would say.

No. I've been active on GoPro forums for years now, and I provide free support there. The forums are often on top of Google's search results, so I guess many users find about my products that way.

Absolutely, I find helping people on forums related to your product is by far the best way to generate traffic to your site and boost SEO. The trick is to be genuinely helpful and not create spam posts purely to promote your stuff.
