Itemzen comes from a desire to build and market a SaaS product from scratch. I have (relatively successfully) built plugins before on an existing product (Altassian Bamboo - https://www.indiehackers.com/product/windtunnel-technologies), and a proper SaaS seems like the next logical step. Starting out with plugins as a first time founder is great as it allows you to focus on building, while the distribution and financial aspects are taken care of by someone else. However, you are also exposed to the whims of the platform you are building for in addition to giving up a (sometimes significant) percentage of your revenue.
The idea to build asset management software is actually several pivots down the line from the original idea to build a family organizer (which in hindsight would have been a terrible idea). Asset management software is easy to understand from a domain perspective, is B2B, has an existing market and competitors but there seem to be plenty of options to differentiate.
It is your typical boring business problem, exactly what I'm aiming for.
