Came up with the idea
by mattiaswFor many years I've had a JavaScript library called ExifReader that reads the meta data from photos. The original use I planned for it never came to fruition but this year I found myself missing an app where I could see my photos on a world map using the location meta data. So I got the idea for Piczlr.

I had the same idea about a month ago and just ran across this project here. I just pushed to the Android app store for review. Its called Photos by Places, hopefully will be in the store soon. Don't let me doing it stop you though. I don't really plan on pursuing it anymore other than I did it as a proof of build for an upcoming mobile app dev platform I am working on, which uses pure javascript to allow one to quickly build apps.

Interesting. :-) I actually already know of a great mobile app that does this but I wanted to have a side project and especially wanted that functionality in a desktop browser. There are various web sites for this but none that I've found are very good.

Oh, I didn't know that. I took a look at your website, I didn't try the app, but from what I seen it looks nice and that you have a cloud solution. I like how you are grabbing the meta data from the images. I looked into that a little while with no luck, so I ended up just going off the coordinates from gps and storing it as separate meta data. I like your way better. I wonder if its possible to modify an image with no coordinates to manually add them in. Anyway, cool to see someone else did the same thing. I look forward to seeing how it turns out.

It's possible but tricky to modify meta data in an image. But I have plans to at least support adding coordinates for images that are missing them but storing them separately. It seems cameras often fail to record the GPS location in the image so I think it would be a nice feature.

Hmm, that may have been another reason why I kept it seperate. Since my meta is seperate, it limits the photos to always being conjoined to preserve the GPS data, but I think if you wanted someone to be able to seperate their photo from the meta and later rejoin inside the service, a possible solution would be to somehow hash the photo data to the cloud meta record.
