Anyone deal with slow payouts from clients?

How do you manage cash flow as you go from contract to contract?

What's your preferred payment method?

Do clients usually let you choose?

I (running a small dev agency) tend to play hard ball with financials - if the client are serious about working together, asking for a large portion (50%) up front for a total project should not be a problem. When it is a day rate, invoice regularly (every week or two) for a short period until a predictable routine has been established.

We are also attempting to convert clients to use GoCardless (UK service) to allow us to reduce friction in taking semi-regular payments.

Thanks for sharing @rossbeale - GoCardless looks like a great solution.

Yeah, I've been waiting for a client to pay X amount to move forward for the past 4 weeks ... (they already paid initial 40% of project to start on it but for some reason are taking ages to pay the rest to finish it off)
