How a Near-Death Experience Turned a VC-Backed Founder into a Bootstrapper with Kyle Gawley of Gravity

Episode #217

Kyle Gawley (@kylegawley) was running a high-growth, venture-backed company when he ended up in the hospital partially due to all the pressure he was under. That experience led to some introspection, which I'll ask him about in this episode. We'll also talk about his new company, which he decided to build with a completely different approach to growth.

One thing I find valuable in founder stories like this is the emphasis on building a business around real customer value rather than simply optimizing for growth metrics. Sustainable companies often emerge from disciplined product decisions, close customer feedback loops, and careful use of resources. From an investor's perspective, that kind of discipline can be just as compelling as rapid top-line growth because it demonstrates that the underlying business can compound over time.

    Great episode! A cautionary tale.
