I've got a new laser cutter and I'm ready to start making things for customers to get a side business going, but I feel like I should build a portfolio first. But, a portfolio looks best with products I've made for customers. How do you deal with this chicken-and-egg problem?

(as a side note, if you want anything cut or engraved in acrylic, wood, paper, leather, or several other materials, I'm very happy to do it for you at cost)

You should build a portfolio first. Make some things for family and friends and take photos of the work. Keep in mind your customers will ask you for the same type of thing you made for your family and friends.
