Tuesday Edition: Daily Stand Up!

#daily-stand-up

Why?

That extra nudge of accountability to achieve even a small step on your IH journey each day.

To join in:

01 Share your epic (a big chunk of work with a meaty objective) you'd like to complete by the end of January.

02 Share what you accomplished yesterday.

03 Share what you commit to accomplishing today.

04 Comment on at least one fellow hacker's progress and give them an IH Point for their check in.

Optional:

05 Share your Work In Progress to underscore your accomplishments.

Then tune in the tomorrow to share how you did on your own tasks!

100 paying customers. 4 earned to date.

    By end of January:

    • πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯100 first chapters published. 113 published to date. πŸ’₯πŸ’₯πŸ’₯

    • [Growth] Do shit that doesn't scale.

KUDOS: @BobAleena for creating a useful Chrome extension!

    WORK IN PROGRESS: Happy Endings

    1. 2

What non-scalable things are you doing for growth? What's working out?

      1. 1

I'm manually contacting chicks on competitor sites and asking them to republish their work. Questionable tactics, for sure. And perhaps even more questionable once I automate the process.

I'm alternately racked with guilt and "by-any-means-necessary". But it's working. What's your take?

        1. 2

I wouldn't personally be hung up on stepping on a competitor's toes. Especially if they are well established websites.

From the viewpoint that author's should own and control the content they produce, I don't feel there is a moral issue with this tactic as long as you're re-publishing with the author's permission.

If you were re-publishing without permission, that would be very different and not at all OK. You should also watch out that you're not putting the author's in a situation where they're breaking a previous contract they signed.

The best would be to get them writing original content on your site, which I'm sure is the goal. Are they staying on your platform after they've gotten the first taste of it?

          1. 2

            Thanks for chiming in!

To be clear, I'm absolutely not posting on behalf of potential customers. And... my site is a dating app, not a publishing app. I've asked chicks to simply publish a first chapter. They could use a prompt for all I care! (Although their own original work is infinitely better!)

As for the stick... too early to tell. But despite the sausage fest, potential matches are starting to interact with each other. February will be an important month to see if I can bring more chicks to the yard and I if I can encourage more interactions...

KUDOS: @vimalin for creating a useful tool that I would never have had the guts to go for.

    JUST FINISHED: ScheduledMemo.com

    WORK IN PROGRESS: AutomatedApi.com, WallabyVault.com

    1. 1

Thanks @jpusateri I really hope that Vimalin can help many people.

For me it was a logical step up from helping people at the VMware forums. Something which I have been doing for over a decade on a daily bases. As a result I do tend to know a bit about VMware Virtual Machines and because of that I also knew that a backup product was missing for the VMware desktop products.

Having said that, I have no idea if Vimalin ever takes off...
For the moment I am dedicating my time on extending and improving the product.

Kudos to @jimbol for going out of his way in the last standup to ask his friend for advice on a subject I'm interested in.

Anyone have advice on privacy policies that factor in mailing lists? (Or might this not be the right place to ask questions?)

  7. 3

I know this is generally an early in the day thing, but it feels more right for me at the end of the day. :)

    EPIC:
    February 18th - beta

    Today:

    • testing framework extension
I spent a good 2 hours today working on parts of the extension that were not absolutely necessary for the beta launch. I have a really bad habit of wanting things "right" that don't need to be right at the moment. I'm a little frustrated with myself.

    Tomorrow:

    • start implementing generation of GraphQL Mutation in php project

Kudos: to everyone for holding the course and being here to support each other

    WIP:

  8. 3
