Hello! I am Claudio a dev/founder in London.
I am building Fluidtable, an alternative to Excel and Google Spreadsheets. With it you can write JavaScript code inside spreadsheet cells.
You could program processes that right now are done manually. Like: fetching data from an API or DB; cleaning data; visualise data on a table; grouping data and perform analyses; generate a PDF and send it to an email.
I need your advice about how to test some assumptions on top of which I am building the product.
The first assumption is that data analysts and data scientists work a lot with spreadsheets. But then they also need other tools and/or programming environments to fetching data, clean it, aggregate it and visualise it. With Fluidtable they would be able to do everything across multiple tables inside a spreadsheet.
The second assumption is that companies create a lot of spreadsheets to track processes and to keep track of relationships, sales, customer support, feature backlogs, etc. They are unable to obtain developer time to create internal apps to automate/properly manage these processes. The reasons usually are that devs are busy on the main app of the business, and contracting agencies is slow and painful. With Fluidtable, they would be able to write internal apps to properly track these processes. With some junior JS programming knowledge, they would be able to create working apps.
Now, how would you go about testing these assumptions? ❓❓❓

Talking with your potential customers?
I would look for online communities where they could hang out like Facebook groups, subreddits, etc. and ask for their feedback.
Thanks, Andrea and Aqui for the advice.
I already have a list of questions to ask these people. I am now poking my network of contacts, but it's slow. I need to interview more people.
Unfortunately, not many people reply to interview requests, especially on those FB/Linkedin groups.
What profile of people should I look for in your opinion? How "people who use a lot spreadsheets" translates into?
Sorry, I really have no idea 😅
However you can’t jump in a new FB group and ask for an interview.
I would start by creating a super simple landing page using a tool like Landen (landen.co) that clearly articulates your value proposition and asking for feedback in that.
No worries, I will figure out something.
I would also try to do something more face-to-face. Try to see what is the workflow of the people you are targeting. The most important thing is to prepare what you are going to ask in advance. When you interview potential customers, you need to be in control in order to maximize the information you can get out of a talk.
Agreed, if he has the opportunity to do it face-to-face would be the best option.
