1/4206 Conversion Rate on Buy Me a Coffee

Hi folks ๐Ÿ‘‹

I've an online tools collection project - 10015.io - which has decent traffic. I've implemented "Buy Me A Coffee" lately and tracking the results, but it is not very encouraging.

People are checking my BuyMeACoffee page, but that's it. Right now, conversion rate is 1/4206 ~ 0.023%. I've checked some successful BuyMeACoffee profiles, but didn't got what is the problem. Here is my page if you want to take a look at it.

https://www.buymeacoffee.com/fatihtelis

I got lots of positive and supportive emails and Twitter messages about the project. So, I've positive expectations about the results. Is it because I need some more supporters to encourage people to donate or is it a must to engage with users on social media (which I'm not very good at)?

I'm glad to hear your thoughts and advices.

Best.

Update: After I posted on IndieHackers, my conversion rate doubled, now I've one more supporter. The name of the supporter is anonymous and I don't know if he or she saw this post and donate, but this is not my intention. Thanks for the coffee anyway. :)

Keep it up with Buy Me A Coffee?

Pretty much every story I've read about donations went along the lines of yours. The ones where the person actually made a living based on donations was on projects where they could easily have made 100x more with a paid plan.

Donations are just not a monetization model.

Yeah ads are a distraction, that's the whole value proposition after all.

      Can't agree more

This is my first indie project and I chose a field (unintentionally) which is hard to monetize with subscriptions as there are lots of free alternatives. I'll choose a different field where I can sell subscriptions for the second one for sure. :)

I have ideas about selling subscriptions for removing ads, but it is not a good value proposition alone imho. I have to support it with extra features. Actually, I implemented user system recently just for supporting this idea, but I need to come up with supportive features to encourage people to buy subscriptions. I'll work on it in the long run.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts @zupa

IMO: Your "buy me a coffee" page copy could be edited for better conversion:

"You can support my efforts by buying me a coffee or become a member. If you do not prefer any of these for any reason, you can also send me a supportive email about your thoughts."

Don't ask for supportive emails or hedge here. Ask for money! Ask for money from anyone receiving value from your project. They're on your buymeacoffee page. They're not on your sendmeasupportiveemail page. Sell, sell, sell!

I'm not sure what's standard, but I think you can do much better than 1/4206 conversion rate.

You are 100% right @mark_b1234. I'll keep the text short on BuyMeACoffee page. The text needs to be to the point.

    Hey Fatih,

Very nice project, however as you mentioned the niche is quite competitive. You already got some great ideas from the folks in the thread that I would agree with most of. Let me suggest another thing ..

Would you be able/afford to disable ads for some time and see if helps (at least on your best performing tool) the reason for that is when we see ads running on a site like yours we think internally that the site is already making money via ads so my donation would be a redundancy in such case (at least phycological) most of the products that I have seen having good conversion with BMC aren't running ads or at least it's very minimal between navigation .. In all cases you will need high traffic or as others said ask for donations at the aha moment . One last thing try different copies many people out there don't even know what buy me a coffee is, specially if you have international traffic.. best of luck buddy

Hi Wael. I've also negative feelings about whether it is a good idea to run both ads and buy me a coffee at the same time due of the reasons you mentioned. But, it is really hard to replace ads with donations, because donations are unpredictable. I don't think it can perform as good as ads. I try to use ads on minimum, generally ~2 for each page, one at the top of the content and one at the bottom. Many people prefer to use 4-5 of them with sticky ones. I will work on copies, as you said, maybe it can be better to inform people about what buy me a coffee is.

Random feedback for your site: The hero text is "All Online Tools in โ€œOne Boxโ€"

Tools for what? I tried searching for analytics tools and didn't find any, so it's definitely not "all online tools".

    1. 1

Hi @XCS, it is the vision and long term goal of me actually. It is same as day one, when I have only one tool. :) The term "online tools" is generally referred to micro tools, but I'll be pleased to hear that if you have any other suggestion. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

    1. Optimize copy
    2. Ask for donation after Aha moment (for example connverting SVG to PNG
    3. Every quarter, nudge chrome extension users to donation page like Adblock plus extension do.

P.S. I love last gif / animated stuff. Where you found it?

    1. 1

"Aha moment" is a good idea. Right now, I have static icons/banners for BuyMeACoffee which are outside of the main tool view. I can bring a button right after a user successfully ends an operation on any tool. I'll work on it. Thanks for the idea Falak.

I love last gif / animated buzzing bee stuff. Where you found it?

Sorry Falak, I just see your P.S. I got it from Lottiefiles.

I have a few points about this:

    • I think you're "buy me a coffee" prompts aren't in the right places. You have to remember that they came on your site to use the online tools. It's when you've solved that pain-point, you can then ask for a donation. I tried using a few of them and I didn't see any prompts. Also, ensure the prompts aren't annoying popups. Make it super UX-driven.
    • I'd say to change your messaging on your "Buy me a coffee" page. Donating is what you'd call an "impulse buys" and research shows that most impulse buys are triggered by strong emotions. So change your messaging to appeal to the emotions that fits the context of what your tool solves, founder backstory, and ultimately give them a compelling reason to donate. Tip: Ensure to A/B test your messaging too for the best results
    • You operate in a super competitive environment that doesn't solve a big enough pain-point so trust me.... Noone's gonna pay for a subscription. Atleast, not in its current form. Instead, try to get power users to sign up and take small steps to being apart of your ecosystem (signing up for an account, regularly using the tool while signed in, or users that reached out with feedback/feature suggestions). Then, setup a prompt for them to see when they've used a specific tool "X" times with the prompt saying, they could possibly lose access to that tool and to donate to avoid that. --> At this point, you're using both the built up stored value + loss aversion psychology principles to your advantage.

Idk how much these steps will help boost your conv. rates, but I'm pretty sure it's much better than 1/4206 lol (unless 99% of your views are bots or something).

    1. 2
      • My CTA's are all static. It is a good idea to make them dynamic and show them right after a problem is solved for user. I don't like popups too, so I'll figure out a smart way to show them.

      • I'll work on my BuyMeACoffee text. I'm also not satisfied with the current version, but it is hard to write an emotional text if you are not a native speaker of a language. Maybe, I can get a little bit help from my native speaker friends.

      • I recently added user system to increase engagement where user can comment, add tools to fav, request a tool etc. But, I want to keep the service forever free, so blocking content for subscription is not a point where I want to go. I'm not expecting users to subscribe on BuyMeACoffee, I just add it to test if it somehow works. For a subscription, you have to dominate the market where users always encounter with your tools and get a usage habit. It is really hard for such a competitive field.

Thanks for alll of your suggestions @Romeoxogrowth

I would suggest to add "pricing " in the header. In the pricing section a large text screaming "Forever Free" and somewhere near it, include the buy me a coffee button with some catchy headline.

The reason I'm saying this is, most people are very supportive and would love to donate, and having the right words at the right location will trigger them to donate (this will require A/B testing and your creativity). The pricing tab is what most people check out after the homepage.

I like the all in one toolbox concept, how do you plan on monetizing this though?

    1. 1

I like the "pricing" idea, definitely worth giving a try. I'll add it soon and share the results here if it increases the conversion. Maybe, it may help someone else if it works.

I'm using only Adsense for now and I'm not a fan of traditional ads for monetizing because it creates distraction. That's why I'm looking for alternatives like Buy Me A Coffee, but I need to find different ways to increase donations like you suggested. I'm also open to different monetization suggestions.

      1. 1

Affiliate marketing is a big win, especially in your niche where you're giving a list of free tools, you can't charge for free, right? So the best bet would be affiliate marketing, for example signup as an affiliate for well known SaaS products such as HubSpot or 1Password. You can combine this with blogging, for example write an article on "Top free google sheets extensions" and then include a link to your affiliate product. There are players making $10ks per month doing this.

    Hey Fatih,

first of all, 10015.io looks really cool!

As for Buy Me A Coffee, I've been releasing a small project -Where Can I Watch this?- a few weeks ago.
It's a simple website that lets you check where you can watch a movie or tv show in your country. I've also implemented a Buy Me A Coffee on the website. I made a post on Reddit about it and the post got more than 500K views in just a few days. People have been using my tool consistently since then (I didn't set up any analytics on the website so I'm not sure how it translated into visits).

So far, I only got 1 coffee! Like you I'm wondering what could change that but I don't really have a clue so far...

PS: Where can you see the page stats on Buy Me A Coffee? I can't find the views metrics on my dashboard.

    1. 1

      Hi Mathieu.

Really cool stuff. It's hard to monetize a project just with donations, at least in the start period of it. I'll try "pricing" suggestion of @NazuJam. Actually I'm open to all type of suggestions, not only for Buy Me a Coffee, but also for different monetization methods.

Reddit may be a good place for introducing your project. Which subreddits do you use for your project?

By the way, statistics are at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/dashboard/stats

      1. 1

Yeah @NazuJam's suggestion is interesting. I hope it will help with conversion rate!

I posted in /r/InternetIsBeautiful which is quite a large subreddit. People seem to like it overall even if I got some harsh comments as well :) I guess that's part of the game :)

Thanks for the stats link, I still have no clue where to find it from my dashboard but at least now I have the direct link :)

        1. 1

Thanks for the tip. I'll try to use Reddit more efficiently. I'm not very good at introducing my project on different platforms, but these kind of suggestions help a lot.

  9. 1

    Just do some affiliate

  10. 1

I don't get it, why would someone buy you a coffee?

    Start chargnig for your project.

    1. 1

I also thought this, but it is not that type of product that people generally pays. Also, it is hard to compete with free alternatives. Maybe I can offer both Free + Pro features, but I don't know if it has a market, because most of the tools I develop are minimal tools.

      1. 2

I was just going to write what @FarouqAldori said. You have a really nice page with nice tools, done by you.
You don't need to charge for all but charge for some, or for example in some cases you want to export in some format you have to pay.
Create a subscription mode where people can have access to all, including a one on one to you
I honestly think you have enough material to have a free, pay, and freemium version.
Keep still the buy me a coffee.
I also would take ads and create a blog where you have affiliate links.

        You can do it, man.
Congrats on your website, by the way. It's bookmarked

        1. 2

          Hi Ricardo.

After all this brainstorming, I decided to go with "Freemium" idea like you mentioned. Some features will be available only in subscribed plan and I'll remove ads on this plan too.

I'll also create a blog, I'm working on the CMS side right now. I will test affiliate links if I manage to get traffic from the blog.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and encouraging comments.
