Just yesterday we celebrated my son’s first birthday. With that, my wife and I had been parents for a full year now. A one year ‘streak’, in the familiar lingo of those into habit tracking/quantified self. Not that I was tracking, and I can’t break the streak even if I wanted to, LOL.
This is not a post about my son though – I’m usually quite reserved about talking about my family. What I would love to talk about is how the whole experience had shaped me in other areas of life, especially my work as an indie hacker:
⏳ The power of constraints, or learning how to do more with less. Less sleep, time and/or money
🏥 Trailblazing a deviant path far away from the mainstream - analogous learning from home birth on how to power up as an indie hacker

Anyone here with similar experience? What other good (or bad) things came out from being an indie parent?
First of all congrats! The first year is always special. I resigned from the corporate world when my 3rd son was born. Then I did freelance projects while taking care of him. After a year my health took a toll and I got sick. I am better now but I try to take care of my health more consciously. Still need to improve on how to do more in less time. It's just when you're so full of ideas and excited to do more that sometimes we forget to take care of ourselves. 🙂
Enjoy the early years of your son coz it goes by so fast. Take lots of pics and videos.
@vethlopez yes so true, the one year just flew by. The days are long but the years are short, indeed. Glad to hear you're taking better care of yourself now. Completely understand the 'occupational hazard' of being an indie hacker full of ideas! :D
Congratulations on surviving the first year! :)
Thanks @bhumi !
Congrats Jason, the first few months for me were the most difficult ones. New experience. New routine. Then, slowly, things started to get back on track.
Some things I learned after having my son:
I'm learning something new every day with him (he's 4 yo now).
@Leo thanks! Yeah the learning curve in the 4th trimester is steep indeed. Tbh we took longer to get back and track, only now after 1 year do I feel like things are more stable.
Interesting point about having more free time than you thought... how did you come to that insight?
I mean, after the baby was born, I realised that I used to have more free time than I thought.
Before: I was busy, doing lots of things.
After: Still busy, doing all the previous stuff + taking care of him
But now, I'm trying to be as efficient as possible. Not wasting any time. I'm failing on this though lol
True that haha! Somehow having constraints made us squeeze more time out of no time!
