100,000 users (doubled in 5 weeks) 🚀

It was only five weeks ago that I celebrated my project volt.fm reaching 50k users and now it has just reached 100k users!

volt.fm is a website that lets Spotify users see their stats (top artists, songs, genres), compare them with their friends, promote their playlists, and discover new music.

I've added these feature to the website in the past month:

  • Users can now save their top tracks a playlist. They can even save any user's top tracks as a playlist. It's a really great way to discover new music.
  • Added support for searching the whole website for artists, tracks, and genres.
  • Users can now follow artists, playlists, and other users directly on Spotify without leaving volt.fm.
  • They can choose the default time frame for their stats on their profiles.

One of my biggest golas with volt.fm is to help users share and discover new music. So I'll be building a few cool features in that direction in the upcoming weeks.

Advertise on the volt.fm newsletter
Every month, I send an email to all the users and report their stats. And they love it! If you'd like to promote your service/product to this large community of music lovers, let me know.

And follow me on Twitter for behind-the-scenes updates on how I'm building volt.fm.

what are you using RabbitMQ for and how high are your hosting costs?

    1. 2

Every task that takes a non-trivial amount of time (like building user profiles and sending emails) goes into RabbitMQ first. This helps me manage the load, make sure there's no data loss in case of app restarts, and easily scale it in the future.

      1. 1

Thanks for the reply, makes sense. Does your RabbitMQ then run in high availability mode or how do you ensure, that RabbitMQ can go down without data-loss?

        1. 1

I currently run a single instance only. It's a single point of failure, but it has worked well so far :)

    very nice!
what strategies did you use to rich your audiences?

    1. 1

      Thank you :)

The most successful one has been posting on Reddit.

can you share other options you tried?

        1. 1

I'm also trying Quora and SEO.

  3. 1

What language do you use and how you get the data from spotify?

    1. 1

I use TypeScript both for the backend and the frontend.

I just use the Spotify API but I've done A LOT of optimizations to make sure it can handle the load.

This is great! What's the ratio of free to pro customer?

    1. 1

The number of Pro users is not very high. I'm working on other monetization plans.

  5. 1

That is some amazing adoption rate!! Lets see how long it takes to hit 200k !

  6. 1

    Congratulations on all your success!

  7. 1

Awesome congratulations, what is your tech stack website is good

    1. 2

      Thanks!

It's Node / Express / Postgres / RabbitMQ on the server and Tailwind CSS / Vanilla JS on the client.

I'll switch to React some time soon, though.

    wow this is fantastic!
Like everyone else that has commented before me, it'd be great to know more about your marketing strategy because it's clearly been super successful!

    1. 2

      Thank :)

I regularly post about the new features and milestones on Twitter, Reddit, Quora, and LinkedIn but most of the new users join through word of mouth. When users see their stats, they naturally want to show them to others.

    Congrats!
I signup yesterday at volt haha https://volt.fm/ibelick
How did you manage to get your first 10K users? And how did you scale so rapidly?
I love music-related products, good luck!

    1. 2

Thank you, Julien! Awesome to see you on volt.fm :)

I got most of my first 10k users from my posts on r/spotify and r/truespotify.

The rapid growth primarily comes from users sharing the profiles and stats with others on Twitter and other social media.

        Thanks for your response!
Another question: what's your tech stack?

        1. 1

Backend: Node / Express / Postgres / RabbitMQ
Frontend: Tailwind CSS / Vanilla JS

  10. 1

    Perfect, good luck Soheil 👏

  11. 1

    Well done, amazing growth

  12. 1

    Congrats, whats your marketing strategy?

      Thank you.

Congrats on the milestone! 100k users is crazy!

Are you looking to monetize volt.fm and how would you be looking to do it?

    1. 1

      Thank you!

Currently, there's a Pro plan which users can upgrade to and add some cool features to their profiles. I'm also working on a music promotion service for artists and labels.

      1. 1

        Very cool !

I think you can start reaching out to artists and labels to kickstart your promotional services and start monetising given that you've amassed 100k users.

        1. 1

Yes, I've already started doing that.
