Hello, my dear newsletter crew members!
I have learned a lot by reading your stories and today I wanted to share my experience with this community with two goals: first, help those who are entering this world now, and second to ask for help and advice.
First, some context and numbers around my project. My newsletter is a weekly news roundup about space exploration and human spaceflight, it’s called The Space Roundup - https://spaceroundup.substack.com/ - and I send an email every Sunday. It’s worth saying that I really enjoy writing it and it has allowed me to get in touch with a lot of very interesting people at top companies and organizations such as NASA, SpaceX, Blue Origin, and more, so in that sense, I am very happy and extremely satisfied with the experience.
I have been consistently working on it for the last 7 months, 35 emails sent in total, spending around 1.5-2 hours per week. I have built an audience around a Twitter account (https://twitter.com/curiousAstrona) that has grown up to 1.3k followers and via a welcome DM for each new follower, I have managed to attract an audience of 120 subscribers. Basically, I post space-related news on Twitter plus weekly links to my newsletters, I get followers and some of them become subscribers. Open rates are around 30-40%.
Regarding my monetization strategy so far, I wanted my content to be available for free, so I decided to monetize it via Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/spaceroundup) and Ko-fi https://ko-fi.com/spaceroundup so that in case someone likes my content, they support me that way. So far I have 4 monthly patrons and 1 Kofi contributor: which summed up to $100 so far.
What’s next? I want to find one or two sponsors in my niche, and I’ll a link to help them contact me on my newsletter. I just need a couple of companies that are interested in my audience (they can be tech, engineering, defense firms, etc) and that are willing to pay a small monthly fee for a banner or some sponsored content. I have even been contacted by a couple already, so I think there’s potential in there BUT here’s the problem: there’s no way they are sponsoring a newsletter with so few subscribers.
So the obvious problem here is that I don’t seem to be able to grow my audience: I am consistent, I create content my readers love (even some of them pay for it just as a way to support it), I amplify it on social media, and there’s a niche of companies that open to paying for sponsorships, but my audience is so small that I would need to multiply it (I think something between 1000 and 5000 subscribers might start sounding right to my potential sponsors)…and I don’t know how.
That’s why I need your help: I have signed up for several listing sites with little luck, I’m afraid of being shut down as a spammer on Reddit and Facebook groups if I post a link in there, organic growth on Twitter is soooooooo slow (7 months to get 1.3k followers and 120 subs? Come on!)… so yes, here I am asking for your feedback: what’s your experience getting to that first 1k-5k subscribers mark? What about min amount of subs to get a sponsor? What about other channels to amplify your content?
I’m all ears! 🙂
Thanks a lot for your help and for sharing all your knowledge with this great community
Cheers!
It sounds like you're a bit frustrated that you've worked really hard on your newsletter, but are struggling to make money from it.
So first of all, I wanted to say that it sounds like your newsletter is actually doing incredibly well! 100+ subscribers and some excellent stats to match!
Secondly, it sounds like you're thinking now about earning some money from your newsletter with advertising / sponsorship.
While I agree that generally, your newsletter is still probably a bit small, here are some examples from other small newsletters making money -
2 examples - https://thecuriousbunch.xyz/, www.theslice.co
TheCuriousBunch has an audience of around 650 subscribers. The Slice is a little bit larger around 1500 subscribers. Both are making $50+ per issue selling advertising space.
So I have 3 suggestions for you -
I noticed in your latest issue, you had a small line saying that you were open to sponsorships. Great! It's important to get that info out there. However, it was so inconspicuous that I nearly missed it. I'd make it a bit more obvious and add it to the end of the newsletter as well.
You might also consider submitting your newsletter to directories like https://letterwell.co, to see if anything turns up.
Just keep writing! I think this is the hardest part of building / making anything, but a lot of the time, it's actually just quite a slog. If you keep writing interesting content, and then sharing it, eventually people will find it. You could even try and incentivise your existing subscribers to share it with some sort of reward for sharing it / referring a friend.
I'm actually in the early stages of building a tool to try and make it a bit easier to start accepting sponsor placements in email newsletters. You can check out the landing page for a little bit more info - www.sponsaurus.com, or reach out for more info.
Also, just as a cheeky final suggestion - I found your Patreon page incredibly convoluted and confusing. I would strip it down to just 3 tiers, with very clear differences between then. Currently your Patreon page could be written in Hieroglyphics for all I care, there's no way i'm going to read through all that.
Hope this helped you out!
Please reply or reach out if you have more questions!
Your comment is truly awesome, Harrison: thank you very much!
I have immediately acted on your feedback updating Patreon and the sponsorship links.
There's some misunderstanding: I got 1.3k followers on twitter but ONLY 130 subscribers to the newsletter. I agree 1000 email subscribers starts being relevant. I'm not there just yet, but I'll just keep posting consistently week after week to reach there. I know it is doable.
One relevant update is that TODAY I have received an offer to publish an exclusive paid-for interview...so it is starting to pay-off :)
Again, thanks a lot for your encouraging feedback: it truly helps!
Best,
J
No worries, I'm happy to help! And congratulations on receiving that offer! That sounds very exciting for you, and a good opportunity to reach a new audience if you can get the person you're interviewing to share your interview with their audience.
All the best!
Try LinkedIn and finding the people who are working in the space industry. They might want to read a newsletter about their own industry if they are not reading one already?
Oh, @The_Polymerist! It seems you read my mind, Tony :) Yesterday I thought about it and I did it in a LinkedIn group with several thousand subscribers. Sadly I only got two signups, but I'll keep feeding it with updates from time to time without being spammy.
Thanks for your feedback! :)
