10k hours rule to master anything. Could I switch career when I am 43? Any advice?
Throughout his book "M. Outliers: The Story of Success.", Gladwell repeatedly refers to the “10 000-hour rule,” asserting that the key to achieving true expertise in any skill is simply a matter of practicing. It could be the greatest practice myth. My american boss founded my company in Viet Nam when he was 55. I admire him a lot. Nonetheless, I am still afraid of switching to other job because time is running out when i am older. A lot of my friends who are technical guys think so. Any advice?
Good advice. Thanks. I also think that deliberate practice is a good method to improve the result. Age's not so important.
I saw this post on HN as well and I agree to the general advt given there. There’s no speed limit to what you can do and 10k rule to learn a new thing isn’t a law of physics.
Your friends who think your time is running out are talking from their own insecurities. I agree that ageism is real in Tech, but that shouldn’t hamper your learning capacity.
I say make a rough learning plan and just dive in! Small incremental progress beats big plans.
