This is my first post here, so let me catch you up.
I've been coaching youth sports for 15 years — wrestling, football, basketball, baseball & soccer. I've also been a full-stack developer for 25 years. Rails is home, it's the backend here too. But the mobile app pushed me into React Native with Expo.
Here's how video coaching used to work for me:
I'd record athletes at matches and tournaments. Right after, they'd run up to me: "Coach, can I see my footage?" Every single time.
My answer was always the same: "When I get home, I'll upload it to YouTube."
Then the process began. Upload to hard drive. Import into iMovie. Stitch clips into one long video. Export. Upload to YouTube. Finally tell athletes to go find themselves on my channel.
By then? Days had passed. The teachable moment was gone. Athletes scrolling through a long video trying to find their 2-minute match isn't coaching — it's homework.
Every athlete wants feedback. Every single one. And when they get it at the right moment, they get BETTER.
So I built Coach Feedback.
Record athletes. Add timestamped feedback directly on the video. Send it straight to them. They get a notification, tap play, and hear your coaching points at the exact moment that matters.
Athletes use it FREE. Coaches pay $14.99/month.
Just got approved in the App Store this week. First users? My own Point Loma High School wrestling team, and they're hyped to use it. Zero revenue yet. Building in public from here.
Coaching feedback can be challenging to implement. I used to receive vague notes from mentors, which took me a while to understand what needed improvement. Once, a coach gave me a general directive to “make it better,” leaving me puzzled for days. However, obtaining clear and actionable points significantly improved my workflow.
Here are some tips to help you process and apply feedback effectively:
- Ask for Examples or Specifics: If feedback feels broad, try to ask for examples or specific details.
- Record Sessions: If possible, record sessions to replay and catch any important details later.
- Break Down Feedback: Divide feedback into smaller chunks to prioritize which to tackle first.
- Share Understanding: Share your understanding of the feedback with the coach to confirm that you’ve grasped it correctly.
- Maintain a Journal: Keep a simple journal of the changes you implement to track your progress.
What’s been the most confusing or frustrating piece of feedback you’ve received so far?
