17 users on yearly subscription generated 4x the income of 23 users on monthly subscription

I thought I'd summarise 20/21 income from side projects as a note to compare with next year to see progress and if there's anything to be learned along the way...

Archetype B2B focused app:
Yearly subscription model, 17 paying users @ $59.99
Total: $1,019.83

Yourganize
Monthly subscription model, 23 paying users, 49 payments
12 payments $4.99
32 payments $5.99 (price increase)
Total: $251.56

Archetype (yearly subscription) generated 4x the income of Yourganize (monthly subscription) with less paying users.

Both apps remind users 7 days before subscription renewal giving them the opportunity to cancel beforehand.

Those 17 payments for the year equate to 204 monthly payments. It sounds obvious but that's just 17 times users had to be convinced to pay (once a year) versus 204 times if Archetype had been a monthly subscription (17 users once a month). Yourganize had more paying users, 23, but on the monthly subscription many of them churned, resulting in just 49 payments for the year.

It's not quite a fair test to compare these products on subscription/price alone, they are different products after all. Archetype (a typography design tool) is focused on B2B users and Yourganize is directed at consumers as it's a personal organiser. Archetype has been around a few years too and so has had better exposure - it has 5300 users in the db compared with 682 for Yourganize.

But when it comes to the point of convincing users to pay, asking them to pay upfront for the year is perhaps more profitable than trying to continue to convince them every month for the 12 months.

I know this is nothing groundbreaking and yearly subscriptions are available for many products with a discount to make them look more attractive. Maybe the yearly subscription wouldn't work for Yourganize because of the pricing expectations of B2C products versus B2B. But it's a lesson learned directly in terms of income and it's something I'll be considering for Yourganize in the coming year.
