Idea Validation: Is a productivity system app valuable?
#idea-validation: Hey IH! This is my very first post ever, so I'm really excited to join the community!
My idea productivity tool, similar to many note taking apps, but with the system built-in to the flow with suitable tutorials/reminders, as well as data/analytics to help guide you to being more productive (you've moved this item back to the queue 5 times, is something blocking you? Do you actually care?).
The value prop over something like Notion / Evernote is they're just really amazing notebooks. A notebook doesn't make you productive, a system does.

I'm building in the productivity-ish space as well. It can be tough, but it's doable (I think - I'm not there yet :).
You've got some heavy competition with deep pockets, but everyone has a different way of doing things, and if your system works best for you, there are probably other people out there who would like it as well. The problem is, you do have to find those people, and without the adwords budget of a funded startup.
But you also don't need to make the same amount as others in the early days, so you can target a smaller market that they wouldn't value.

Makes a lot of sense, seems like it would be an uphill battle and I'd have to absolutely nail the UX. Thank for the advice, and I'm checking out Brisa boards right now! Looks great!

I feel like it's about the habits/systems and some tools can make it easier, but at the end of the day it goes back to the habits/systems.
Hey Nick, welcome to IH!
If I was in your shoes, I wouldn't choose this space. It's an extremely crowded market, the users aren't willing to pay very much, and it would take a long time to develop (the problem of "increasing productivity" is sooo vague for a single person to solve). It's just going to be too much work for too little profit.
It's easier to sell notebooks than to sell systems. People understand notebooks, but they need to be taught systems. This is hard.
This being said, I don't want to discourage you if you're really passionate about developing a productivity app. I'd be happy to give feedback if you end up developing it. Good luck on whatever you choose to do!
That's great feedback, thanks! I've really been struggling with the UX of how to TEACH the system in a way that's pretty seamless, which you pointed out is the biggest challenge. Will have to iterate on it and if I can't find a clever way it might be more valuable to try something else. Thanks!
Yep, sounds good. Most note-taking apps are "blank-page apps' that don't offer any guidance.
