Would you think this is a good idea? A totally offline private journal app, which user can only manually backup and restore data, say into a json/zip file. The goal is not to use any cloud service, and user have taken control 100% of their data. It's kind back to 1999, and also anti trend of cloud, server etc.
(P.S. I am a iOS developer, so I feel it's okay here to use iCloud service which user can easy sync the data between iOS devices, but basically no other login system to upload data to cloud. But maybe I should not even use iCloud? If I can't trust apple for my data, no other company to be trusted to use...)
I recently fell in love with https://boostnote.io/
It only works on folders, so in my case I easily added a synced Google Drive folder and now I have a local note taking app with some backup to a service I trust and already pay money to.
I am not sure about the "no cloud" thing. Computers break. You can use cloud storage with client-side encryption. That would be sufficient.
I’ve thought about this continuously over the last 3 or so years.
Something that also have encryption would be amazing.
It's all locally, why need encryption?
In case your laptop gets hacked/stolen...
A very good idea. Knowing Apple has all access to all your notes, files etc. I'm not sure about my government but I know in the US they are legally allowed to go through all.
I also want to add that if it is totally offline, and if you gain access to internet; the files that are stored on your phone will be made public knowledge if Apple ever releases your data. I think it would be more secure if it is stored in a private database .
Hmm, good point, but I feel ok to use iCloud service, which it's easy to sync, but no other extra sign up/login system, user can choose not to use iCloud and only manually.

Yeah, Day One is the app I referred a lot, but they used a in-house cloud storage which users' data is shared with them too.
