Hello everyone!
My name is Rui Marques, I'm a portuguese guy living in switzerland since 2008. I studied Energy Systems Engineering, worked for a year as a project engineer and since february 2022 as an account manager at an energy procurement company. I've always been interested in entrepreneurship, building my own company and investing. But I was never any good with programming. I would say I'm proefficient at using a computer (MS Office etc) but never more than that.
In 2020 I started working on my own startup (faroo.ch) with a friend. It's a online b2b rental marketplace. It is online since August of 2022.
This is the start of a new journey. I have decided I don't want to be dependent on anyone to build my business ideas, that is why I am going to learn how to code. At the moment I only know the basics of python because I learned it at university. Since a couple of weeks I started to learn HTML. My plan is to learn HTML, CSS, javascript and Ruby, why I will explain in a moment.
Our marketplace is made with sharetribe go (because we can't code hahah). If we want to add more features we either have to upgrade to sharetribe flex or use the community edition (you get the sharetribe go code from github and hostet yourself). With flex we just have to code the front-end but with the community edition we can completly change the code as we want (needless to say we also need more skills). That is why I also want to learn ruby.
One other reason I want to team how to code is to build other business ideas that I have.
So I think this is enough for a first post. I will keep you updated with more posts. I will probably post every 2 weeks.
Thanks for reading and have a nice day🙂
Welcome! Good luck! Learning to code is awesome. It helps so much to be able to just build what you are thinking of.
Thank you josh :)
Olá Rui,
Bom ver mais um português aqui! Não estou super familiar com Ruby mas sei regra geral programar, mas se for preciso uma mãozinha está à vontade!

Hi Rui,
Nice to see another portuguese here! I'm not very familiar with Ruby but I do know how to code, for the most part, but if you need a hand fell free to ask!
Ola! Obrigado pela mensagem! Eu nao conheco muitos portugueses porque eu vivo na suiça e os portugueses que conheço nao sabem programar. Espero conhecer mais pessoal de portugal!
Abraço!
Hey Rui,
This sounds really good. However, just one point that I have at the top of my mind. It's a little difficult for humans to be good at everything. So at some point, you also need to figure out what are your strengths and weaknesses. Use your strength, and ask others for help when it comes to your weakness.
All the very best. :)
Hello :)
Yes, I think that is true aswell. Of course when the business ideas get more complex I will need a partner or team. But I also think most people should learn to code if you want to stay relevant/competitive/innovative. So this is also a way for me to stay competitive.
Hey Rui,
Welcome to Indie Hackers, nice to have you here.
I really love your idea about not being dependent on any other developers but coding it by yourself.
It is going to be a long journey, however it will pay off sooner or later.
Thanks for the support GCM!
