2.5 Bn people can’t afford Internet access. Need your feedback on our landing mockup

Hi, we are building https://giveinternet.org/ a nonprofit platform that lets anyone sponsor monthly internet fees and devices for underprivileged high-school students living in refugee camps and rural areas.
Please give the most honest feedback possible on our landing page mockup - https://gofile.io/d/kyZUnx

Great cause to work on. Congrats! Here's my 2 cents:

    • you titled this IH post with "2.5b can't afford the internet", but when I saw your landing page it didn't really meet my expectation. I was expecting photos of people across the world from the US to kenya to India and a story about how you'd help them all. When I read your FAQ I realized this is very focused on Georgia. I think it's a much stronger and more focused narrative to explain how this will focus on Georgia initially. When I look at your team it makes sense that you would understand how and why to do this in Georgia, and actually gives me more confidence in the initiative. If you'd made big claims on the front page about how this is for every child in the world I'd be a lot more skeptical (if I'm honest). How many kids in Georgia can't afford the internet, and how will you expect to move the needle on that? That's the really interesting question in my mind.

    • I read your FAQs and this is the bit that stood out "Coming from a post-Soviet, developing country, our team has seen first-hand the transformations brought about by introducing connectivity into a region"... This is super interesting, I want to know more but there isn't much more info. What are these transformations? Can you paint a picture in terms of a persona? Can you share any data at the 'regional level' to illustrate the impact?... You clearly have a point of view on all this that I don't, and that's why you & your team should be running this initiative and not me, but if I don't get insights and substance here then how can I really know? I think your front page needs to explain much more of a story here, and one that really demonstrates your credibility and understanding.

Hope these are helpful pointers! Cool initiative!

Yes, the pointers are very helpful indeed. Thank you very much!
We have started our project in Georgia - https://charte.ge/. Up until now connected 700 students with the help of 2000 monthly paying donors. We are also working to launch an international version GiveInternet.org focusing on the middle east and African countries. Refugee camps in Lebanon and South Africa will be the first regions. The FAQ on the site is from the old days so we'll definitely change that.
And very good points about the transformation and impact. We'll work on it! 🙏

All I can say is that I saw the homepage, was moved by the mission, and signed up. So I guess it works!

I liked your landing page. It is amazing.

I just missed knowing how many people had subscribed to your mailing list. Also, in the Where Does the money go section, I would simplify the call to action to just Give Internet - as this is your goal. You can add the Sign Up CTA in another section.

In the same section, I would remove the drag from the allocation. It is hard for me to know what percentage you guys need to keep the lights on. I would just make it a flat percentage and that's it. Also, being a non-profit does not mean a no-cost, nor a no-revenue. You guys have to make money to keep the engine running - your mission depends on it.

The donation you guys offer makes it possible for you to actually sell goods, such as t-shirts and cups. These might increase the revenue and the total impact your non-profit. Maybe give it some thought!

Thanks for the feedback! Your points make a lot of sense.
We are thinking a lot about the revenue model. Yes, donations are usually considered unsustainable but philanthropy is still an economic force. People are still willing to give to causes that resonate with them but to those NPO's whom they trust (Only US philanthropy market - 450 bn annually). But you're right we definitely have to find/test some other revenue models.

Hey fellow Pioneer! :) The file seems to be unavailable.

Hello, hello fellow Pioneer:) Sorry about that. This here should work-https://gofile.io/d/kyZUnx

Heya, I've seen it before and I still think it looks great. You do a great job of telling a story and stating your purpose.

  5. 2

Hopefuly Starlink will change this :)

    1. 1

Hopefully yes, but still the price of devices and monthly payments will stay a huge barrier for a long time, for most of the families who live under 5 USD a day.
Ironically we are on a mission to eradicate ourselves as every nonprofit should strive for. Solve the problem and shut down the organization:) So we are big fans of Starlink!

    It looks solid!

    Some thoughts
Email subscription form feels empty. You secured so much space for it but not using, hard to understand the main purpose of subscribing.

user-scalable=no is not the best practice for viewport settings

Your console throws error on every scroll event

Email sign up form can be placed on the page if possible rather than redirecting users in the new tab. You already have the area for it.

    Good luck with it!

    1. 1

Agree, will fix it! Thanks a lot!

On mobile is good. Maybe, reworking the buttons shadow. The shadow should have opacity, as you have it but using a hsla value, like we say the value a as for .30, .25.

    Why?
A not suitable shadow can make the user percive your site on the wrong way.

That's an amazing initiative. Access to internet does not mean, just to look up social media but it can change your life.

Thank you very much! Appreciate your help!

    I like it. Good conten/message.

I tend to try to look for technical design elements that might be a bit off, so I have a couple notes.

    • There's no padding/margin/spacing between the "Coming soon" paragraph and the "Leave your email" image (at least on mobile).
    • Once you scroll down, your logo isn't vertically centered in the header.
    • It looks like sign in/sign up aren't properly centered if you open the hamburger menu.
    • I cant put my finger on it, so take this one with a grain of salt, but something feels off about the vertical margins in general. Without breaking out the ruler, my gut says that there's too many different sizes being used.
    1. 1

All this makes sense to me, will forward it to our designer. Thank you very much!

  9. 2

I think it's mostly solid, I just don't like top navigation button being in two lines.

I would like to see them in one line.

But in general I am very much ok with it.

    1. 1

Makes sense, takes too much space. Will think about how we can solve this. Thanks a lot!

  10. 2

Hi! You should give a space after .org/ url. It is bleeding into the next word and the final URL (https://giveinternet.org/-a) is not working

  11. 2

Egad, that app pixelated your image pretty badly! :-P

My biggest suggestion is to lead with your transparent non-profit status. Why? When I see a site like that, I just assume that I don't know the people running it, and it's just as likely to be a scam. If there are NP credential sites or something, try to link to that as well!

Landing page looks nice overall :)

    1. 2

Thanks for the feedback! Could you please specify what do you mean to lead with transparent non-profit status? You mean to highlight that we are 501c3 nonprofit or just bring the transparent section up on the landing page?

      1. 2

Yeah! Awesome idea and I wish you luck!

I meant just highlight the fact somewhere obvious. I'm not a UI person, so it was just my gut reaction of "I don't know these people and I don't want to keep reading" when I saw your hero section, and thought showing some credentials would help with that.

        1. 1

          Agree, thanks a lot!

Actually, we are going to cover every country where we find a reliable educational nonprofit partner on the ground. And donors would be able to choose Countries and projects later on.
