2 weeks of helping people in Reddit threads. 2 people said yes to beta testing. Both ghosted. Here's what I'm learning.

I'm building an AI intelligence layer for Meta Ads. It connects to your ad account and tells you what's happening with your campaigns, why, and what to do about it. If you agree with the recommendation, one click pushes the change to Meta.

I've been doing outreach for about 2 weeks now. No ads, no budget. Just me being super engaging in marketing and advertising subreddits every day helping people diagnose their campaign problems.

The strategy actually worked. I had real conversations with people struggling with things like:

  • Campaigns dying overnight with no explanation
  • Good CTR but zero conversions
  • Bot traffic polluting their data
  • Creative fatigue burning through their budgets

Two people agreed to test. One agency owner. One freelancer managing 40 clients. Both seemed genuinely interested.

Both went quiet when I asked for the info needed to onboard them. Hopefully they reconsider.

What I've learned so far:

  1. Helping people in threads builds real trust and credibility. I got called "some of the best advice I've read on Reddit in weeks". That felt good but didn't convert to a signup.

  2. The gap between "yeah I'll check it out" and actually signing up is massive. Saying yes costs nothing. Creating an account and connecting your ad data requires trust I haven't fully earned yet.

  3. Asking for someone's Facebook email on Reddit feels like too big of an ask. The problem is I’m still waiting for meta to approve my developers app. Next time I'm going to offer a live walkthrough call instead so they can see the product before committing anything.

  4. The product keeps getting better while I wait. Just shipped multi-account switching so users can manage multiple ad accounts from one dashboard. But features don't matter if nobody's using them.

I'm still at it. Still commenting daily. Still building conversations. Still looking for my first real tester.

    The ghosting pattern after beta yes is so common and the diagnosis is usually the same: the person saying yes to beta was being polite to someone who helped them, not expressing genuine intent to use the product. 'Yes to beta' is the lowest-friction way to end a helpful conversation.

    The fix: don't ask if they want to beta test. Ask what they're currently doing to solve the problem, then if the answer reveals real pain, ask if you can show them how you're tackling it. Interest comes from the problem, not the product.

    The ghosting after 'yes' is actually useful signal - it means the activation moment hasn't happened yet. They wanted the idea, not the product.

    Two things that made a difference for me:

    1. Track every 'yes' with a follow-up date. If it's just in your head or email history, it disappears. The moment you log 'Reddit beta signup - 2 weeks ago - no response' in a CRM, it forces the follow-up.

    2. Change what you ask for. Instead of 'want to beta test?', try 'can I show you one specific thing for 10 minutes?' Lower commitment, higher completion rate.

    Most solo founders lose beta users not because the product is bad, but because the onboarding handoff is vague. 'You're in' followed by silence is not activation.

    I've been building a client portal module into a Solopreneur OS for exactly this: every beta user gets a status, a next step, and a 'last active' date. Ghosting becomes visible before it costs you a real user.

    What's the current gap - are they not responding to follow-ups at all, or just not actually using the product after they get access?

    Reddit 'yes' to beta testing almost never means yes. It means 'this sounds interesting enough to not say no in public.' The conversion only happens when there's a clear, low-friction next step that happens within minutes of the conversation.

    The problem: Reddit has no natural warm handoff. You help someone in a thread, they say 'this is great, DM me,' and then the DM either never comes or goes cold after one message. The channel is genuinely bad at closing.

    What actually converts: direct Calendly link in the comment itself, or a 'here's the waitlist, takes 30 seconds' with URL. The more steps between 'yes' and 'signed up,' the more ghosts you get.

    I'm running a parallel experiment with IH comments for a Solopreneur Notion OS I'm building - same 'help first, product mention at the end' approach. The difference: IH comments stay visible longer and the audience is already founder-minded, so the follow-through rate is higher even without a direct CTA.

    'Yes' in a Reddit thread is one of the softest commitments possible - no stakes, no friction, no accountability. It costs nothing to agree and everything to follow through.

    Two things that reduce ghosting: (1) reduce the friction to absurdity - a direct link to a 5-minute setup, not 'reply with your email and I'll get back to you'; (2) follow up within 24 hours before the impulse fades.

    People who engage in comments and then get a specific, structured ask ('30-min call, Tuesday or Thursday, here's the link') convert at a much higher rate than open-ended 'want to test it?'

    Did you give them a specific next step, or was it more open-ended after they said yes?

    @Nvsn_ai — the "said yes, ghosted at onboarding" pattern is brutal but it's telling you something specific. Trust built through community drives acquisition; conversion fails at the FRICTION moment — when you ask for credentials/setup that require real time + trust transfer.

    Two things that helped me with a similar gap (I run a free WCAG accessibility scanner):

    1. Time-to-first-value BEFORE signup. I made the free tool work on a public URL with zero signup, zero connection-to-anything. The prospect pastes a URL, sees "23 critical accessibility issues" in 30 seconds, then decides if they want the deeper Playwright-rendered audit (which is where the signup lives). The credential ask happens AFTER they've experienced value. For your Meta Ads tool: have them paste a screenshot or describe a campaign symptom; your AI diagnoses 2-3 likely causes; THEN offer the connector for ongoing monitoring. The connector is the upsell, not the entry point.

    2. The ghosting is information. Both prospects said yes on enthusiasm; both went quiet on commitment. That's the gap between "this would be cool" and "this is worth my Friday onboarding a startup tool I just met." Lower the ask: don't onboard them — send ONE diagnostic insight about a campaign they mentioned in the thread (you can probably reconstruct it from the symptoms). If they reply, the relationship continues. If they ghost again, you know it wasn't real urgency — and you learned that without burning your trust capital.

    The Reddit advice quality you're getting praised for IS the proof-of-competence. But it converts on a different timescale than the praise. Months, not days. Keep going — the conversions tend to be back-loaded, and the praise compounds even when individual prospects ghost.

    What I've come to think: "yes" in a Reddit thread isn't a decision, it's a mood. The person was in a helpful conversation, felt good about it, and said yes while that feeling was still warm. By the time your onboarding email arrives they're back in their normal headspace and the friction feels completely different.

    The fix I'm trying: compress the gap between yes and first value as much as possible. The longer the delay between "I'm interested" and "I've seen it work", the more the mood fades. If someone has to wait, remember where they found you, click a link, create an account, and then connect something sensitive — you've lost them somewhere in that chain.

    Aryan's paste-and-diagnose idea is the right instinct for exactly this reason. Not because account access is too much to ask eventually — but because it's too much to ask before they've felt anything.

    Reading this with a knot in my stomach because I am about three weeks away from being in exactly your position. Building an AI assistant for a different niche (content sites instead of Meta Ads), and my plan was also community engagement to get the first pilots.

    We just opened our own beta program this week (StoreMD, Shopify store health scanner) and designed it specifically around the ghosting problem you're describing.

    What we changed: instead of asking people to sign up and figure it out, we scan their store first and send them the report. They see real findings on their own data before they commit to anything. The conversion happens after the value, not before.

    The other thing that helped: capping it at 10 spots with a hard deadline. "Free lifetime Pro" sounds generous but it doesn't create urgency. "10 spots, first come first served, opens Monday" forces a decision.

    Your Reddit thread strategy is solid for building trust. The missing piece might just be the ask. A live walkthrough call is a good move. Way easier to say yes to 15 minutes of screen sharing than to handing over their ad account credentials to a stranger.

      This is honestly one of the most useful pieces of feedback I’ve gotten. You’re right on both points.

      The positioning thing makes total sense. “AI layer for Meta Ads” is how I think about it as the builder. But the person I’m trying to reach is thinking “why did my campaign die overnight.” I need to lead with their problem not my solution.

      And the account access thing is probably the biggest friction point. Both people who said yes went quiet the moment I asked for their Facebook email. That tracks with what you’re saying.

      The “paste your numbers and see a diagnosis instantly” idea is really interesting. Right now the full experience requires OAuth connection but I could probably build a lightweight version where someone just drops in their key metrics and gets a quick analysis. No login, no account access, just instant value. That would be a way better first experience.
