[Ask IH] Advice for recruiting board members for a nonprofit startup

Not sure if this is the right place but asking here just in case you have advice for me:

A nonprofit's Board should be comprised of people who are passionate out the organization's mission. But if the organization is brand new and doesn’t have a following of passionate people, where do you start?

For Inceptive, initially I asked friends and extended family to be on the Board. They have been great but I worry about having a "Founder’s Board" who'd want to support my efforts than the mission. I have been thinking about adding new non-friend/family members to balance our Board. I'd appreciate if you have any advice or potential resources to help identify and recruit a diverse Board. Thanks!

I'm no expert, but I'm on the board of a small nonprofit. The board started with a handful of family & friends and grew only once the mission was seeing big success. If you can find 2 or 3 friends/family who are willing to meet once per quarter, I'd start there and grow the board only once you've established the nonprofit.
