I'm about to launch a free daily email newsletter.

I'm about to launch a free daily email newsletter. Currently, I am trying to figure out the tech stack.

For now, I'm thinking about using Wordpress + MailChimp because of simplicity. Looks like this will get expensive quickly though (mainly because if sending volume). There are also extra costs I'm doubtful about (for example, just using a custom domain for Mailchimp costs $99).

Are there better options to start cheaply that can potentially scale with the business?

The needs:

  • custom domain name
  • LP hosting
  • Email database
  • Option to host other pages
  • Email template builder, scheduling, etc..

I actually started building a ready deployable email newsletter app before https://github.com/17twenty/newsletter-signup -- there's some supporting Terraform code somewhere I can dig out but yeah, it's a standalone newsletter. Outside of DNS, it would deploy on a t2 nano in AWS which means it would cost $0 for year 1.

Thanks for the answer! Going for a less technical option now, to test initial market fit.

Hey, I own The Crypt (www.getthecrypt.com) so I'll help answer some questions.

Email Hosting: I like using Mailerlite they have a nice free option and it's relatively cheap for smaller lists. they also host landing pages as well

    Custom domain name: Google Domains

Hosting: any shared hosting should be fine for your website (bluehost, etc), it's an email newsletter business

Email database, ehh, any email hosting provider will store your subs data, but i back everything up.

We use Wordpress with a number of plugins for our website and landing pages.

We are starting relatively cheap but scalability is always in the back of our mind, but by the time you need to scale pass these options, your looking at a decent business already.

Email template builder: Topol.io, nice and simple HTML template builder

Thanks for the great reply! Currently, I am using the free Mailchimp LP and email hosting. My domain name redirects to it: dailygrind.io.

I also have WP+hosting on that domain, so it could create a landing page there, but I'm pretty happy with the Mailchimp version. It's a bit crazy though that they're asking $99/year to link the domain name properly to the landing page.

You're right that about not focussing too much on scalability right now, I'll see first if it scales past the free options.

      Good luck with getthecrypt.com!

I like Revue and use it for my daily newsletter. I am not sure it will meet all your requirements, but it's working out well for me. Here is my referral link if you want to try it out: https://www.getrevue.co/referrals/PY5KNwcKODQcXGhJbTK-Bg
