How about providing a suggested configuration based upon your needs? I need a PostgreSQL DB, Nginx, etc...

    1. 1

That really depends on so many variables that it'd be very hard to suggest. Not only does it primarily depend on the website/application itself, but it also depends on your configuration, cache hit rates, visitor spikes, visitors behavior, etc.

Your best bet would be to ask the person responsible for installing and configuring the server. Alternatively, start off relatively low (e.g. 1 core / 2 GB RAM), monitor the load and upgrade when needed. :)

I more meant for you site to list general ideas for configurations for people that might not know what they need. Of course with the caveats you listed being mentioned.

        1. 1

Ah, understood! We're definitely going to work on the community aspect of the site in the near future, including guides, help requests, and server configuration suggestions like those. :)

Thought I was getting a good deal with OVH to run my https://soccer.coachaide.com on a VPS with 2GB RAM for ~$3/month, but look at that https://www.vpsao.com/hub/cart.php?a=confproduct&i=1 - $7/annual for 2GB VPS system. Now I have to develop something just so I can test their servers :) Thanks for the very useful comparison site!

Just because there are cheaper options doesn't mean you aren't getting a good deal. Different price levels suit different needs, and if you're happy with your current server - there's no need to switch.

As you mentioned though, for a new project, it might be worth trying something else. As long as you always have off-site backups and a contingency plan for downtime, there's not much that can go wrong. :)

      1. 2

Oh I know. I always test any providers pretty extensively, but at that price, I could find multiple new uses as hot back-up servers etc. The crazy thing is though that it wasn't that long ago I used to pay $7/day for an active server!

Sounds great! Super cheap NAT VPSs are great for monitoring, backups, chat bots, etc. And it helps fight IPv4 exhaustion. :)

Oh, seems like this is some special offer from vpsAO, the regular prices are over 10x this offer ($9.95/month). Anyway, can't resist a good deal - got one slice for three years for $21 :) Setup worked ok and was fast.

Nice! I know Azure/AWS/etc are all the rage, but there's a huge cost associated with them. There's definitely still a place for VPS and managed hosting.

    1. 1

Every provider has its place, including AWS/GCE/Azure, especially for environments that need auto-scaling, advanced networking, or that can take advantage of some of the dozens of additional services they provide.

However, as you mentioned, this comes at a significant cost. For most businesses, a virtual or dedicated server will still be a great choice. :)

If you've ever been eyeing a popular server (e.g. OVH or BuyVM) that's usually out of stock, Server Hunter can now send you instant notifications when they come in stock.

To set it up, just click "Notify me" next to any out of stock offer on https://www.serverhunter.com/ 🙂

Thanks a lot for all the positive feedback! Even when you're happy with your provider, there's never any harm in checking for alternatives in case they make some negative changes or you have future projects that might need something else.

We're currently a team of two working on this, so we figured posting as the website made more sense. We're both on our Discord if that's something you use :) https://discord.gg/t7FSVkb
