In the case of the casino slot machine, I have the opportunity to win money. So, I have a reason to play the game.

2. Unpredictable Rewards

There must be unpredictable rewards. By engaging in the behavior, the user receives unpredictable rewards. You get something of value, but you don’t know when or how much.

When playing a casino slot machine, I don’t know when I’m going to win money. I also don’t know how little or how much I’m going to win. This encourages me to keep going!

3. Quick Repeatability

The user can repeat the behavior quickly.

In the case of casino slot machines, the average user can play 16 games a minute. A quick and easily repeatable behavior. To play another game, I simply tap the button.

Let’s dive into some digital products that use this system to their advantage.

Tinder

There’s a reason why Tinder is huge. Using Tinder gives me the opportunity to meet someone special. I repeatedly swipe, knowing I have a random chance to match with someone. Or not. A great example of opportunity, unpredictable reward and repeat.

Instagram

Posting pictures to Instagram gives me the opportunity to get ‘likes’. I post a picture of my dog. Who knows how many likes I’m going to get? I could go viral! Or crickets. Well hey, I can always post another pic. Social media thrives on opportunity, unpredictable reward and repeating the process.

TikTok

Ever seen someone using TikTok? It is like a social media slot machine. People repeatedly swipe on the screen to receive a new, random video. It could be an awesome, life-changing video! Or something lame. Let’s keep swiping shall we! Opportunity. Unpredictable reward. Repeat.
