3 things indie hacking helped me get rid of...
Over the years indie hacking has allowed me to re-evaluate my life and choose things that matter for me.
Here are my top three things I consciously and happily chose to say goodbye to:

What are yours?
What do you mean no school for your kids? Also kind of sad that they don't get to have christmas anymore :( I agree the materialism of buying expensive presents they don't really need is unnecessary, but the festivity and get-together part of it is nice!
No school = home schooling
Why feel sad? We are not! We get to choose our own adventures!

Indie hacking gives you the freedom to think and rethink how to live your life. Evaluate what is or isn't important. Let go what society pushes on you.
Society pushes things like school and (religious) holidays. By slowly doing our own thing we've slowly let go of things like this which actually reduces a lot of stress for us.
Home school maybe?

I'm guessing your kids are now homeschooled? How did they take no Christmas?
Would love to know more about why you "said goodbye"?
My older 2 boys went to school for about 3/4 years, then I took them out (now 14 & 16). My 8 year old has never been. No plans to send my younger girls, though they do go to nursery atm.
I just don't believe in the school system, I view it as kind of like a 9-5 job, but for kids 😬
The more we've left the typical world (No school. No proper employed work. Etc.), the more we found some things felt stupid and a cause of unnecessary stress. One of those was Christmas. I hated organising it. All the effort and waste involved. And we're not religious, so it made no sense. Christmas week is now the best, relaxed and chilled week of the year. We do what we like. We hang out. We are not hassled by anyone. And the kids are totally ok with it.
I also disliked the whole Santa thing (and tooth fairies, etc). One side is the whole commercial aspect behind it, but there is another aspect of lying to our kids. I don't like the lying, as 'fun as adults may think it is' I know my kids can come to me and ask if something is real or not and they will get the truth (in a language that is age appropriate). I know my 8 year old truly appreciates this. And it develops a real sense of trust between us.
It's funny because people are so shocked when we say we don't do that stuff. They feel sad for me and my poor kids! 🤣But really, we're all quite happy and chilled. And the most powerful thing is that we look at each situation and try to make decisions for ourselves, not what other people want or try to force upon us (many which make my kids feel uncomfortable).
I'm a big fan of Christmas but I love your point of view. No brainwashing.
People will be always be shocked when anyone does anything a little differently. It's quite funny that other people can possibly think they know how to make your family work better than the people in the actual family.
Some of these people getting "shocked" spent 8 hours staring at a mobile phone each day, have McDonalds every night for dinner, and spend hours photoshopping their face to look better online. Society has conditioned us to not feel shocked about that, whereas as soon as someone doesn't celebrate Christmas it's the end of the world. lol

Well exactly. The beauty is to have the freedom to explore and make individual choices. Some choose to be digital nomads, we choose not to do Christmas :D
