Ask IH: Are Product/Domain names MUST be the same?

Ask IH: Are Product/Domain names MUST be the same?

I'm building yet another website builder product with a little spin. I envision it to be used for landing pages mostly so I've come up with a name for it that has some meaning in that sense, I'm calling it: 🥁 🥁 🥁

"Highlight"

as in you can highlight your message with the tool.

The only issue I'm facing is that obviously, all preferred domains are already taken so the only one I'm considering is:

hlight.io

What do you guys think?

Thanks,
Peter

Try something like highlightbuilder or highlightplatform.

The naming challenge has three issues: brand name, product name and domain name. Brand name is for building an unique identity and making a difference between your product and other similar products. Product name is for showing clear meaning for users if you develiver a totally brand new tool which can't categorized by current product name.

Sometimes, brand name and product name are same words. For example, Xerox and iPhone. But, Apple is a brand name behind iPhone. Relevant and descriptive are not necessary for brand naming, but for product naming. The secret of brand naming are easy to remember, pronounce, write, and unique meaning. Again, Apple is a perfect example. Apple is not relevant to PC. Apple doesn't describe any thing about digital products either.

If you choose Apple style to naming your brand, it is better to design a slogan which clear describes your product. For example:

    [Track: highlight your moment]

In the above example, [Track] is brand name and [highlight your moment] is slogan. This is just example for showing the pattern. You could come better ideas since you know more about your product than I know about it.

Domain name is not very important now. If you can't get the domain name you want to get, just use "Get+Brand name", "Brand name+app", "Brand name+HQ" or similar format.

It doesn't have to be the same but it should be relevant & descriptive. In my opinion, at least the name of the product should be part of the domain name.

From branding perspective, you may consider calling it "Highlight Builder", "Highlight App" or so.

I don't recommend hlight because it sounds like something else other than what you are working on.

A lot of people use domains like getproduct.com or tryproduct.com, etc. They don't seem like awful options to me.

True but in my opinion such names work with products being sold like courses, workshops, etc.. not with platforms.

        Yea I agree with you

    1. It doesn't have to be the same domain name as product name
    2. .com is the king, buy it if you can
    3. hlight.io is not easy to spell, pronounce or remember. Try to come up with more ideas

Yea I kind of knew it's not the optimal choice...
      Thanks man
