"Clever" domain names?
Good morning/evening Indie Hackers,
I'm preparing to buy a domain for a side project. For the sake of example, let's call the product "pistachio." It's intended for non-technical users.
The question is this: if all things are equal, which domain would you buy (and why)?
EDIT: Sorry for being unclear, but the .com isn't really on the table for this particular project.
I vote for pistachio.com. People remember .com better then .io, .co, .net etc.
.com as this is for non technical audience.
I TOTALLY vote for pistach.io as .io signifies a tech company (if that is what this is) and these new play on words is really interesting to me as a casual viewer and prompts me to click on the link more so than I would if it was a .com
If all's equal, and regardless if it's a tech company or not, I'd vote for 2 any day.
A lot of people suggest .com, but let's not forget that most good .coms are long taken, usually by so called "domain investors" who are very eager to get tens of thousands of $ for those. In this time, I wouldn't bother buying out a .com unless it's free. Its significance is overrated IMO.
Yeah, I should have been clear in my post. The .com for my target domain is available but it's out of my price range (on the order of many thousands).
If it is for non technical people I would look for a .com
100% agreed here. A .com is good investment for business.
Even if you buy pistachio.io I would recommend redirecting to a .com
pistachio.com
[dot] io is not [dot] com, which is the "default" domain extension. If you use [dot] com, in most cases, it's not necessary to include it as part of your branding. When someone says "ask on StackOverflow," people would assume stackoverflow.com, not other extension. For other extensions, it's necessary to use the full domain name as your brand. Preferably, your domain extension matches your brand. Some good examples of brands using non-[dot]com domain that is cooler than if they use [dot]com instead are linktr.ee and Lnk.Bio. Now, I think you get the idea why they picked these instead of linktree.ee and LnkBio.io.
I'd try to find a variation like usepistachio.com that's available and is a .com, especially since it's for non-technical users.
I also try to think about how it works when spoken, in case you need to say it on a podcast in the future (you don't want to have to spell it out)
You can use a tool like instantdomainsearch.com to go through a bunch of different variations very quickly.
This is a really good point about how it sounds when spoken. What about when media start to pick this up - how will they say your website name if you don't have a chance to explain it to them? Just something to keep in mind.
That said, I like the way pistach.io looks. :)
Depending on the nature of your product, I really like pistach.io - that said, you mentioned non-technical users so for that reason I would really try to get a .com domain.
I would choose pistach.io between these two. It is short and easy to remember.
Pistach.io is better, but both are inferior to a good .com.
