It has been 4 months since I launched, and I don't have any customers yet.
Let's break down the numbers:
My site, Code Code Ship, which aims to help developers sell pro versions of their software libraries, is in a very small niche. Additionally, building a pro version of a library takes time. Add to that that nobody wants to be your biggest customer, which prevents anyone who has already solved this problem for themselves from coming on board.
The videos on YT from YC are illuminating, and helped me realize that I the problem I chose is difficult on a number of different axes:
Can you identify your customers? it's a small percentage of open source maintainers who might want this, so unless I spam everyone who has a reasonable number of stars on GitHub, I can not simply pick up the phone and call my prospective users. They are needles in a large haystack.
How often do people have this problem? Not very often. One time.
Now I have one theory left to test: patience. If someone has this problem in the future, that person will find me, and then I will have a customer.
I need to get money flowing into the business now anyways, so I will be putting this on the backburner for now and finding a new freelance client.
When do you decide that you have given something a good shot (including decent marketing) and it isn't taking off? Should I wait a year, making sure the site looks like it's alive, and see what happens?
Hi, I would be interested in if you have managed to improve the situation in the last couple of months and if you did anything specific to get any traction?
I am in a similar situation that I have a specific product which I sort of wanted to target serious developers (https://slyce-io.co.uk) and released about a month ago. I added to PH, Reddit etc but as of yet not one person has commented good or bad or signed up - its only been a month since release and been plenty of people visiting the site but nothing which really surprises me from looking at the other posts here that they release and get 100,000 upvotes within 10 mins of putting them on - it makes me question my message or the product itself.
I don't know if it is the right audience or I need to target the right developers - again the pool of potential customers on PH might be too vague and I need to look at a niche set of developers but time will tell or maybe as you said patience is needed.
Good luck with your product.
Hey, sorry for taking a whole year to respond. Nothing much has changed. I have now started using my own product, made some tweaks to hopefully better make use of the traffic coming in to my content, but still things are very slow. I have now made a grand total of one sale of my library.
So the project is kind of on the back burner. I still think it can go somewhere, just not actively pushing it at the moment. If it goes anywhere it will be a very slow burn.
Thanks for the reply and hope you can get back to the project at some point in the future.
