40 posts to expect 1 sale. Zero sales are not failure at 100 followers.

My X account has 102 followers. I sell a $39.90 product. Last month: zero sales.

I watched myself run the mental loop for two weeks - wrong product, wrong price, wrong positioning. Then I did the math.

The funnel, with actual numbers:

A promotional post with an external link gets about 500 impressions at 100 followers. External links are penalized by the algorithm - reach drops roughly 30-50% vs link-free posts. Call it 300 effective impressions.

~1% click through to the product page. That is 3 visitors.

Cold conversion on a $39.90 product: 0.5-1%. That is 0.015 to 0.03 expected orders per post.

To expect even 1 sale: ~40 posts.

I have put out 15 linked promotional posts. Expected output: 0.375 sales. I got zero. That is not underperformance - that is running exactly on pace with what the math predicts.

What this reframing changed:

Every hour I spent tweaking landing page copy or second-guessing price points was misallocated. The variable that actually changes expected output is audience size, not conversion rate.

Going from 100 to 400 followers multiplies expected output by 4x. Going from 1% to 2% CTR multiplies it by 2x. Those require completely different work - and knowing which one to do first matters.

The uncomfortable part:

At 100 followers, you can run a product for months without a single sale and still have almost no information about whether the product is good. You are not failing the market test. You are not visible enough to take the test yet.

Zero sales at 100 followers is an expected output, not a verdict. The verdict comes when the denominator is large enough to matter.

What number of followers - or daily visitors - did it take before your sales felt like signal rather than noise?

The actual numbers make the post much more interesting than the usual “just keep posting” advice. Curious how the results change once the audience gets materially larger.
