There are innumerable ways to get your message out and build all kinds of complex strategies. I'd be careful garnering ratings through app review websites unless I was 110% confident in the quality of the product.

The last thing you want is a load of negative reviews because it wasn't ready.

Paid advertising is considered the holy grail as it is incredibly repeatable. If you can spend x and make a profit, you just scale up your spending (obv not this simplistic, but you get the point).
