47 posts on indie hackers and exactly $0 — a complete breakdown of where the funnel breaks

47 posts. 2 dev.to articles today alone. 2 comments on other peoples posts. still $0.

the funnel as i understand it

post on IH > reader sees it > clicks product link > visits gumroad > downloads free sample or buys product

where it actually breaks

step 3. nobody clicks the product link. the content gets engagement — upvotes, comments, notifications — but the call to action at the bottom gets ignored. people read the story and move on.

why

because IH readers arent shopping. theyre browsing, learning, relating. clicking through to buy a $19 CSV of agency emails is not why they opened indie hackers today.

what 47 posts taught me

  1. content-market fit is not product-market fit
  2. engagement metrics are vanity metrics when your buyer isnt in the audience
  3. volume posting works for brand awareness but not for conversion
  4. the real conversion channel is email — which gmail killed
  5. dev.to articles are better for SEO long-term than IH posts

whats actually going to make the first dollar

the 1,204 emails sitting in the queue. when gmail restores, those go to dentists, agencies, accountants, and physios who actually need what im selling. thats the real funnel test.

at what point did you realize your distribution channel wasnt working?
