Pivoted from 14-day credit card trial to freemium model. Would appreciate thoughts on the new approach!

I've been giving this quite a big of thought. We launched our paid platform on Product Hunt a couple of weeks back. It went fairly well. We got a lot of traffic but only a few credit card sign ups.

I've decided to build a free tier instead that doesn't require a credit card, with the option to upgrade within the platform.

It would be super helpful to have you go through the flow and let me know how you think it could be improved and what you think of the value proposition in general.

Thanks for any help!

I like the concept of the site although I think this would be greatly enhanced with Apps for Apple TV, Roku, etc. And apps for the phone.

A note on freemium, I commented in another thread but on a recent Startups for the Rest of Us, they mentioned that conversion for Freemium models to subscriptions is about 1-2%.

Based on your subscription levels: $19.99 for up to 16 people, $49.99 for up to 100 people, the question becomes who's going to pay $49.99 a month and have a lot of people over to their house to play this enough to justify it.

So, I'm not thinking you'll get a large take up on your subscriptions from individuals, even for the $20/month because I'm guessing people will opt to play with 8 people instead and switch out (or play as teams).

Now we switch to where you can make money if people aren't doing subscriptions.

First, build large trivia sets that people can pay $1 or $2 for to play that has a good number of questions 100+, for example. Then you have revenue stream and people are willing to drop small amounts for trying it out.

Second, I would focus on licensing to businesses where people are sitting around. Restaurants, Bars, Doctor Offices, etc. They can license for a monthly rate. I would also build in the ability to have, in between videos interstitial ads for the business. For example, restaurants can have featured menu items or specials. You can also charge for the ability to ask the user if they want to subscribe to the businesses email list as well.

Finally, I'd change your Get $20 Credit referral program. If I have a group of 16 people play, they all sign up and I now have 16 months of free Social tier. When you're offering rewards to refer people, unless you're VC funded with plenty of funds to burn through, focus on giving people bonuses that don't necessarily cost you (and yes, reducing your revenues are costs). So, if you did my first point above, then you could give them added trivia sets, which will cost less then giving them $20 a month, for example.

A side note, because you are running a for profit service and because I work full time for a global entertainment company, I'd be sure you get full rights to display images from copyrighted property, the last thing you'd want is to get a phone call from the legal department of Fox or HBO.

Thank you for taking the time to write down the thoughts and suggestions! I have a lot of changes to make.

      Two more notes:

Do you need www. on the domain name? It's a lot easier to work without it these days even though they redirect to huddle.games, you'd be better removing it from your site and directions.

Second, be nice if I could create my own Thumbnail instead of using a default one.

I've heard this (removing www) a few times, but it's not clear to me why it's better. Can you enlighten a fellow IH? Thanks!

Generally speaking, www. doesn't have any function to it in that it doesn't make your site URL unique, it doesn't make the browser handle your domain any differently and even Tim Berners-Lee has said it was probably a mistake to use www. on web pages.

That being said, when you're vocalizing a domain name, it's longer to pronounce www. then the rest of your domain. Finally, marketing will tell you that without it makes your domains look cleaner and easier to remember.

I might be misunderstanding! The www.huddle.to to join a game?

        1. 1

yeah, why not just show it as: huddle.to

          1. 1

We actually used to show it as huddle.to but too many players didn't realize it was a URL and couldn't figure out how to join, so we added the www. Just interesting UX behaviours we learn along the way and tweak.

True, different flow since you're reading off the screen.

I would integrate it with some thing most likely to be used by your target market Google/Facebook or some other option to login/register. Filling out a big form is another hurdle. If you make it just one click to try and see the value then your conversion will improve.

Most people struggle with the Freemium model. I believe you made the correct choice. Plan of 85% of user base becoming freeloaders. Your challenge now, how can you get revenue from the freeloaders? If you are smart you can do it.
