5 Marketing Secrets Most Marketers don’t tell Indie Hackers

#1. Marketers don’t believe in Color Psychology

All the people posting information regarding use this or that color to build trust, awareness, emotions have no knowledge about market research.

The affects of color on consumers change from Industry to industry. If the market is filled with a singular color like Blue associated with all of the bad guys it might not help you build the trust.

Another factor comes in demographics and cultures, many people view different colors based on what it stands for where they live like In Japan blue is heavily associated with mental health & suicide prevention.

Meaning the color psychology only works if you know the market. If you don’t it’s just a dumb play to choose your whole branding & visual content based on a psychology hack that doesn’t work.

#2. Influencer marketing is shifting

Last year, Influencer marketing reached it’s peak. I’m not saying it won’t grow anymore. But Influencer marketing agencies & D2C brands have moved on from their goal of brand awareness to Conversions.

Influencers & brands are still uneducated on how to market through influencers. And that has caused a huge difference between influencers that hold value charging less & some charging more than they should.

And most brands reach out to the second influencers as they have numbers but In 2023 most marketers are focusing on asking questions about the relationship between influencer’s audience & engagement on last 3-5 sponsorships.

For heads up, Influencer marketing is difference from Creator marketing as there are only 14% influencers in world and 86% are creators.

#3. Buy now pay later (BNPL) is changing Business

Last Holidays, 48% of Gen-Zs used BNPL to make purchases, followed by 47% millennials. The numbers are crazy and these are expected to grow this year.

The same consumers went looking for discount incentives to save on their purchases & this is a common Trend expected to grow this year even more due to financial conditions in US & EU.

From Marketers, BNPL helps us to build a better long term relationship with consumer if they are happy with purchases. There is an increase in how BNPL users open emails from businesses more frequently looking for new offers than regular consumers.

#4. Value Content, Not Psychology Hacks

I’ve seen a lot of posts in this community promoting random hacks to make people buy. And those don’t even affect 90% of business because it isn’t that big to make a minor change impact the sales.

What you should focus on is Content because, Research by Double-Verify shows that 46% of consumers are hit by misinformation regarding a product or business before making the purchase.

There are blogs ranking on google comparing your products & competitors dropping fake yelp reviews. It’s more important for you to track content around your brand created by others.

And to create content that educates your ideal consumer & make them reconsider the buying options. That is a better decision than removing a dollar sign from your product page to use psychology.

5. Don’t do social media if you want the quick show!

I will advise that just because social media is booming. It doesn’t mean you have to spend all your time creating content & posting about your brand.

It’s a hard play, first part: social media manager isn’t the answer to your brand’s social growth. Because they aren’t the best at market research & you have to understand engagement that doesn’t come from your target audience means crap to your business. You have to do the research, content, networking & much more.

If you do social media, I will advise to first consultant a marketer or if you have a marketing team. Try to ask how well they know your target market on social media exists and how are they prepared to capture them.

If you did business in traditional marketing, don’t go for social marketing for virality. To bring customers do your research & don’t listen to those social media gurus.

They haven’t worked on growing a business other than their own followers.

  1. 1

1000% agree with numbers 1 and 4, we're building a brand breakdown platform to help people more easily analyze point #1 while also getting a sense of how they can implement upon #4

Also believe in #5 but it can be augmented with cold dms to help grow an initial audience

I've also been looking into #3 but want to wait until we've even out our pricing before we implement a program like that.

    Awesome read!
