5 Tactics I Used To Lower Churn By 28.5% Quickly

In this short post, I am going to highlight the 5 tactics that I used to massively decrease my churn. I will also explain the strategy and reason behind each move so that you can try to apply this to your SaaS or subscription business.

TACTITC #1 - Stop Sending Emails

Stripe was set up to automatically send emails to monthly users 3 days before their card was going to charged. I turned this off and saw this dramatically decrease churn. When people think about cutting costs, they are going to think about the last people who messaged them. Therefore, I only send emails that are benefiting and giving value. You should still send emails before yearly subscriptions renew though.

TACTIC #2 - Add A Community

Just by adding a Discord community, I have people who are staying purely for that community. Ideally, you want your software to be amazing, but adding communities that they lose access to when their subscription ends is another strong hook.

TACTIC #3 - Allow Users To Pause

I gave my users the chance to pause their account for 1 or 2 months right when they initially click the cancel button. In the last 30 days, 28% of users going to cancel choose the pause option. This will increase revenue churn but keep the user. You can easily integrate this with custom off-boarding through Churnkey

TACTIC #4 - Why Are Users Cancelling

Using Churnkey or Baremetrics Cancellation, you can easily add a survey and understand why your users are cancelling. This is essential to improve the product and even offer win back offers or education based on options selected. For instance, if a user selects too expensive, I offer a one time discount or if a user selects they didn't fully understand the product, I show them a step by step video of how to use the software and link to chat with support.

TACTIC #5 - Effortlessly Fight Card Failures

Using Baremetrics or Profitwell, you can set up automatic card failure, card expiration, and dunning sequences to get users to update their card when a payment fails. I recover at least $1,000 month using this and put absolutely no work into it.

HAVE ANY CHURN QUESTIONS?? - I am not expert but I have spent the past month research churn and retention so if you have any questions, feel free to leave them below!

Solid tactics — one angle that's often missed in churn reduction guides: involuntary churn (payment failures) can account for 20-40% of total churn, and it requires a completely different intervention.

Voluntary churn needs cancellation flow optimization, save offers, and win-back campaigns. Involuntary churn needs one thing: reach the customer within 24 hours of the failed payment before they get Stripe's generic cancellation email.

The customer didn't want to leave — their card just got declined. A simple "your payment didn't go through, here's the link to update it" email sent immediately gets ~50% open rates and recovers 30-60% of those customers.

Adding "Day 1 recovery email for failed payments" to this list would probably push your churn reduction past 40%.
