6 lessons learned after 2nd day of Startup School by YCombinator

Storytelling is crucial when you need to convince people of your idea. Not only investors but customers also.

Telling stories well is a great way to raise money, sell products, and generally be a captivating friend, speaker, lover, anything. However, I used to struggle with storytelling, as it didn't come naturally to me, and I saw so many others who were better.

Then I met Tomas Pueyo, who came on the Indie Hackers podcast. He had a simple framework for storytelling: (1) get listeners hooked by describing a problem, (2) explain how the hero finds a solution to the problem, and (3) describe the hero using the solution to win the day.

I've been using it ever since, and it works! Even this comment is using that structure. I'm far from a master storyteller, but I feel like having a memorable basic framework is 80% of the battle.

You can build a product that will increase cost but it must simultaneously decrease many other costs.

Yeah, you've got to clearly show a direct impact on costs... but it doesn't necessarily have to be monetary. Sure, that's probably the easiest way to get customers. But you can cut other types of costs too. Netflix cuts the cost of boredom.
