60K Twitter followers within less than a year.
I started to be active on Twitter less than a year ago. Actually, around the end of February 2021.
Within less than 12 months, I'm on 60K followers. It's much more than I've expected. Few things I've learned:
1. Be consistent
Most people start and do the thing for a few weeks, then stop because there is no success. For me, it took more than six weeks to see some traction.
2. Engage with large accounts and those who produce quality content.
It's crucial. Nobody cares about you if you're new. You build your credibility by engaging with others. It's much more important than producing tweets/threads.
These two things are the most important ones that helped me be where I'm now.

One thing I've been curious about: how focused were your conversations/engagements? On Twitter, I tend to engage about everything from Startups to Sports to Politics. Did you keep your engagement highly targeted or broad?
Sounds like lots of work and dedication with a really inspiring consistency. I can totally see why most people don’t stick around for long enough to see results and end up quitting prematurely. Well done. Thanks for sharing.
Yeah, actually a lot of time spent on the platform. Especially at the start. But it's really worth it.
This sounds exactly right.
When I was tweeting on my own to my <200 followers, I had 437 total impressions for a month, 2 new followers. The following month, I responded to popular tweets with meaningful comments: 72,900 impressions, 11 new followers.
And then I quit after a few weeks, just like @ckissi describes.
Partially I stopped because I was talking to people about how to run a startup, instead of running my own.

I recently started taking Twitter more seriously and I definitely agree. Tweeted every day of Jan 2022 and finally started getting a little traction on Twitter.
Especially when you have <500 followers, not many people will see your tweets. Engaging with others is the only way to grow and build a community.

How much do you engage and with how many people on a daily basis.
At the start, I engaged with 6 large accounts and several other accounts. I engaged about 50 - 100 times/day

Curious, how do you make that feel natural without coming across as attention-seeking?
3 to 7 tweets engaging with ppl.
Depends on how many tweets there are that I think I can add value to.
Interested to hear from your side of things what worked when engaging the large accounts - obviously large accounts would have a bunch of people trying this and only the high-value stuff would get through to them. Were there any hacks involved in ramping up their engagement or did it just simply boil down to connecting in a thoughtful manner?

You're replying to others' tweets/comments. You'll get noticed/followed over time.

Did you write a lot of threads in the beginning or was it more interactions with other accounts?
Threads are waste of time if you're a small account because nobody cares. I started to write threads when I had like 4000 followers.
It took me more than 2 months to gain 1000 followers.

Nothing like "thank you", "cool" works. You have to add value to the conversation in your comments.

How much did luck equate to your growth? i.e. Tweets that went viral or were re-tweeted/quote tweeted by one with a sizable audience?
The more followers you have the easier is to grow and have a viral tweet. I got some virtual tweets also when I had much fewer followers. Most of them were related to my success story though. I refer to my pinned tweet and my success story published on my blog.
Do you use hashtags?
Used when I started. Then when I got 1000 new followers I stopped completely.
Did you feel that the hashtags helped at all?
How much time every day do you invest on Twitter?
Currently about one + half an hour daily. At start, it was more.

Yeah, consistency is the most important factor here. It takes a lot of time to see results and get traction.
