Getting in front of the right people.
Obviously, this is easier said than done. How have you done it?
Currently I am working to get my product in front of people who hire illustrators and photographers. We are primarily targeting art directors and creative directors. In looking for the best ways to get in front of these people, I have been thinking a lot about how to gain the attention of specific audiences- for free.
I would love to hear stories of how other makers have done this! I am getting some success, but am working on the best ways to reach an audience with a solution, when they are used to being bombarded with messages from people who want something from them.
Thoughts?
Try to find them where they hang out or network at. LinkedIn is OK - don't fall into one of LinkedIn premier plans though as that will be a waste of money. I created an app that is more specific to managers and HR - so I'd go to local Meetup groups, networking groups, HR Associations, etc where those people would be and I'd just talk to them and see if they'd like to meetup for coffee to discuss more. I got my best results this way and was able to talk to a lot more people and get real-time feedback, which was super valuable. I'd also hit up forums, instagram, twitter, etc where they tend to spend time on the internet. Cold emailing, for me, hasn't yielded nearly as much - too much time and effort for very little results.
I'm with you on finding ways to meet people in person. I feel that this can be much more effective than cold emails. Emails work great to a certain extent - but with a pretty low conversion rate. Meeting in person takes more effort, but yields a greater conversion rate (visits to site + subscription to email list).
I think I would talk to 10-15 actual art directors via linkedin chat etc to learn about their everyday’s “goto” places (like dribbble? Etc) then explore how you can get their attention there. But hardly it will be free;/

@justinvincent I've definitely checked LinkedIn- always a good resource to find people based on career-related criteria! Thanks for the link to the article!
Side note - I am open to advice and thoughts on my situation (and if you have connections to art directors and creative directors, you can always send them to folyoz.net ) , but I am also wanting to hear your stories!
