3 months ago I realised I was missing out on one of the biggest opportunities that social media brings: building a personal brand.
After some grinding, last week, I reached the "magic" number of 1.000 followers on Twitter. These are 7 things I learned on that journey:
The best moment to start was months/years ago.
The second best time is now.
I was laid off 1 month ago, the good thing is that now I have an asset (my Twitter account) to leverage on my new job hunt or my future projects. Start. Now.
Follow the best and see what works for them. Take it, remix, make it yours and post again.
Stealing doesn't mean copying. Stealing on this context is meant to be used as inspiration.
Twitter rewards consistency. Tweet every day and you will see results, but you need to be patient.
Most days you will miss, but you need to keep showing up to hit the target.
In my case and after 1.064 tweets, one thread went viral and propelled me from 250 to 800 followers on just 1 day.
Don't underestimate the power of the DM on Twitter.
You have top indie makers and thought leaders available to chat just one DM away.
Share your work and distribute across all channels that make sense for you. No one else will come and do the work for you.
This is a great example on how I am doing it for myself.
You need to know really well the problems and pain points your target audience is facing.
Let your tweets be the answer to those problems and the audience will come to you.
Growth is not linear. Instead it compounds.
You can see little to no action on a daily basis, but one day, BOOM, it explodes and your numbers skyrocket. Doesn't happen in a matter of weeks though.

I personally dislike accounts that feel they need to follow the "tweet everyday" as they often don't have something of substance to share every day. The high noise/signal ratio makes me unfollow them.
For me it works as I am trying to provide that value daily, but understand your point.
I say "show up every day" because even if it's not the best tweet, it's a good excercise to get better at tweeting.
Cool, Excellent post.
Can confirm. Helping out a friend and grew a community of already 380 people within 4 weeks and about 200 tweets
Those are great numbers!
Are you doing your own design on the images that you upload? Those simple designs look great.
Yep! I do them myself! I think it's a great way to complement my tweets
Thanks Alex. Show up everyday is a good idea. I'm starting tomorrow. Before I used to show up once in 3 months. Didn't think it was worth it. Now with this nudge, I have no reason to dilly dally again.
Good to hear! Try to stay consistent for weeks or months and you will see results!
Everyone expecting point 7 but no one wants to do 1-6.
Yep! I get asked sometimes if it really takes that much effort. It's not an easy road, but I believe the rewards are 100% worth it.
i believe so too.
How much time do you spend social media daily?
I normally spend around 30 min to 1h to schedule tweets. The rest of the time I just check in from time to time to engage w others or answer DMs and replies. I would say around 2h to 2h30m more or less!
got it!
how do you cope with the "gadgets and technology overdose"?
Trying to unplug as much as possible, specially on the weekends! But it's hard, we live in an hyperconnected world and social media is part of my work so...
got it!
hope the recipe will be discovered soon :)
Very cool - seems to be easier anytime someone enjoys doing what they're building (in this case, an account or just a community of people around the platform). Love seeing this on Twitter / IH
Thanks for your comment AC! For some people it might seem like a lot of work (it is), but for me, it's fun + a learning process. It's a win-win in my case!
