Trying to apply to engine from Superhuman. I think it's more viable if you have a larger userbase, which bootstrapped products usually don't have in the beginning (to see if you're developing towards the 40%). Still talking to users and getting feedback brings a lot of value.
I think his insight is that if 40% of the users (even if that is 40 users out of 100) say they'd be very disappointed if the product went away, that's a signal for pmf and you should get more of those users.
I'm interpreting this based on the way Superhuman applied it to their users. They had lots of users, but only around 20% said they'd be very disappointed. So Superhuman focused only on the 20% (based on their persona) until they became the 40%.
Similarly, if 40 out of 100 people would be very disappointed, it's a great learning because now you can focus on getting 10-100x more of those same type of users
It really bothers me how 4chan.org/pol/ has entered the zeitgeist. it's the most racist, misogynist, disgusting, violent and puerile discussion/image forum online
