75% of media pitches not relevant

In a poll by PR firm Cision:

75% of journalists say fewer than a quarter of the pitches they receive are relevant or useful.

Don't do that.

More to the point:
Make your pitch relevant to the journalist by including information customized to the publication's audience.

If you don't know what would resonate for the journalist / publication, do more research before sending your pitch.

Other key takeaways from the article:

  • Keep pitches short and on topic.
  • Help find the interesting stories and angles.
  • Use your subject line effectively.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with reporters.

The whole report is worth reading.
