What 'Product Validation' technique(s) have worked really well for you and your product/business?
Launching with an MVP and seeing if people will pay. (Not offering for free to testers)
With getslice.co, though still not fully ready for growth, there are paying customers who have validated to model and given me confidence to begin the growth process.
It’s also great because the customers who pay care about the development of the product and will be honest with you rather than saying “yeah I’d use that” only because it’s free.
Very interesting experience you had with your product, I've read that a lot of people say only the paying customers are your source of validation - do you agree?
The validation for Indie Hackers came from going to our most promising distribution channel (the HN forums) and seeing what people were interested in and talking about over there.
Specifically, I looked at a specific kind of discussion that continually reoccurred, then read the comments to find out what made those discussions good/bad, then modeled the IH interviews off of that. That's why I chose to do certain things like make revenue numbers public, etc.
That's a really specific insight you found and a great way of validating your idea before thinking of the MVP, thanks! :)
Get one customer to pay for your service/software/whatever. Literally that's the only thing that counts as real validation. If you can get 1, you can get 10, 100... Also, a good idea for validation is selling a service first. And then making the software that does that for you (Software as a Service :p )
I've heard about this type before :) Have you done this yourself? I've seen a lot of people approach validation with 'dummy' landing pages and use Adwords, Facebook Ads etc to validate a non-existing product before building it.
Yes Luke! On my first micro saas Idea, I wanted to sell a service to handle the creation of micro deal pages for e-commerce products. Before I built anything, I've manually designed a deal page for a car dealership and sold a marketing service to them. They paid handsomely and I validated the idea that there were customers willing to pay for that. I ended up not pursuing that market as I wasn't really passionate about it. But made a nice €10k that year with that Idea :)
